Workforce Housing

This past fall, the Wisconsin Realtors Association released Falling Behind, an in-depth report on Wisconsin's workforce housing stock.  The numbers are astonishing: between 2000 to 2009, Wisconsin built 299,000 housing units.  But in the last decade, we've only built about 56,000.  For young people starting out and businesses attempting to attract employees, the resulting rising rents and property values pose challenges.  Wisconsin needs more homes and apartments for the average worker.  Is government policy creating market irregularities?

I've asked Legislative Council to form a study committee to address the growing shortfall of workforce housing.  A study committee would be in a unique position to put stakeholders and experts in a room and create bipartisan solutions.

For more information, click on the link above to download the report, or watch this WisconsinEye interview with the report's author, Prof. Kurt Paulsen and Tom Larson of the Wisconsin Realtors Association.
