Rep. Pronschinske Advocates for More Efficient Housing Assistance
MADISON – State Representative Treig Pronschinske (Mondovi) introduced a bill today during a Capitol press conference aimed at providing assistance for Wisconsin families experiencing chronic homelessness.
“I am proud to be working with my Senate and Assembly colleagues to put together legislation that will help Wisconsin residents who are experiencing homelessness to be more efficiently served,” said Rep. Pronschinske. “It is vital that we help those who are the most vulnerable and most in need of stable housing.”
Rep. Pronschinske’s bill would give the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) the authority to develop a two-year pilot program to assist chronically homeless individuals and families on the waiting list for federal Housing Choice Vouchers (HCVs). Current wait times for such assistance can span anywhere from a few months to a few years – often meaning those families are placed in more expensive and less efficient temporary housing scenarios.
“This is a fantastic step in combating chronic homelessness by working to reduce sometimes extremely long wait times for stable housing,” said Rep. Pronschinske. “Knowing that at the end of every day you will have a place to call home is essential for all Wisconsin residents.” During today’s press conference, Rep. Pronschinske was joined by Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke (Kaukauna) as well as a number of colleagues from around the state in unveiling a package of bills targeting homelessness. The legislation package of bills to end homelessness emphasizes giving Wisconsinites the tools needed to move them towards independence and self-sustainability.
