Thank you for taking the time to read this week's e-update. I am pleased to share with the people of the 87th District what I have been up to this week and provide an update on what's happening at the Capitol.

If you ever have any thoughts or concerns on state issues, feel free to contact my office. It is helpful to me as your state representative to know your views, as it allows me to better represent you in the Wisconsin State Assembly.

The State Budget Process Begins

Since taking office in January, I have heard Governor Evers talk on many occasions about reaching across the aisle and working together.  In the spirit of cooperation, my Republican colleagues and I sent a letter to the governor which detailed areas that we believed we could work together on.  I was hopeful that Governor Evers' 2019-2021 State Budget proposal would be the start of bipartisan cooperation.  I was wrong.

Last night, Governor Evers addressed a joint convention of the state legislature to share his state budget plan.  As I listened to the governor's speech, I could not help but be disappointed.  The state budget that Governor Evers unveiled last night was more of a Madison liberal wish list than a viable state budget proposal.  While I did hear a few areas where I think common ground can be found, such as continued support for broadband expansion, many policies in the governor's plan are way out of line with the priorities of the people of the 87th Assembly District.  There are a number of policy changes in Governor Evers' proposal that I just cannot support, such as in-state tuition and drivers licenses for illegal immigrants and removing work search and drug testing requirements for welfare programs.  In addition, state spending under the governor's budget would increase by over $6 billion.  Yes, you read that right, $6 billion!  That is over $1,000 per adult and child in Wisconsin.

Overall, I am disappointed by the amount of new spending and the number of deeply partisan items that Governor Evers has placed in his proposal.  A number of these proposals he knows will not be supported by the Republican-controlled legislature nor most Wisconsinites outside of the liberal bubble of Madison.

After the governor's budget address, his state budget proposal was introduced to the legislature as Assembly Bill (AB) 56 for consideration.  The state budget is the most important bill that the legislature considers each session.  In the weeks ahead, I will be reviewing the governor’s 1,148-page plan and working with my colleagues in the legislature to craft a budget that works for the people of Wisconsin.  As the budget process unfolds over the next several months, I encourage you to reach out to me and share your thoughts on how to make this state budget better for you and our community.

Governor Evers Withdraws the National Guard

I was also disappointed with another action of the governor this week. On June 18, 2018, under Governor Walker, the Wisconsin National Guard was ordered to the southern border of the United States in Arizona to assist U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Agents in securing the border. On Tuesday, Governor Evers issued an executive order for the withdrawal of the state's troops from that mission.

Drugs, such as heroin and meth, are ravaging communities around our state.  Law enforcement has traced many of these illegal drugs to our nation's southern border.  It is important to do all we can to prevent these drugs from reaching our state, including the use of the national guard.  I am proud of our Wisconsin National Guard for their assistance in this important mission and wish that Governor Evers would have allowed them to continue supporting a mission that helps keep our communities safe.

Meeting with County Sheriffs

On Wednesday afternoon, I met with Rusk County Sheriff Jeff Wallace and Sawyer County Sheriff Doug Mrotek at my office in Madison.  They were in town for a conference and stopped in to discuss issues impacting their departments and the counties they serve. We had a great conversation and I thank them for their service to the people of Rusk and Sawyer Counties.

Meeting with Family Health Center of Marshfield, Inc.

This week, I met with folks from Family Health Center of Marshfield, Inc. to discuss updates at the center and community state grant funding. I was glad they took the time to come down to Madison and talk with me about what is important to their organization.
