Rainy Day Fund

In May of this year I shared the news that state revenue numbers were coming in higher than previously estimated. Those numbers in May were already reassuring.

We just learned incoming revenue was $75.5 million higher than previously estimated in May of this year. As a result a portion will be diverted to the state’s rainy day fund. After the funds are transferred the state will have $649.1 million in the rainy day fund. To put this in perspective, the Legislative Fiscal Bureau reports the ending balance of the fund at $1.7 million for 2009-2010. If you consult the graph above the trajectory is clear. Over the years we’ve been able to accomplish this through common-sense reforms and smart fiscal management.
