One out of eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Since it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October is a great time to bring awareness, talk about prevention, and learn the risks!

Speaker's Task Force on Adoption

On Thursday, the Speaker's Task Force on Adoption held a press conference to discuss what we learned during our statewide meetings, and how the Task Force will be using that information.

In all five public hearings, we heard repeatedly that the process takes far too long, while children are left in limbo. Because this was a common theme, we are looking at the court process and seeking to identify ways in which we can streamline and create efficiencies.

Additionally, the Task Force is taking a hard look at how we handle situations in which substance abuse is a factor. We are exploring ways that we can maintain familial relationships, while ensuring that the child's best interest is foremost.

With some major challenges and lofty goals ahead of us, I am looking forward to working with my colleagues on legislation that will help provide stable, permanent and loving environments for kids in our state.

Improving Workforce Outcomes

This week, the Assembly Committee on Corrections met to hear public testimony on Assembly Bill 30, which I believe has the potential to make a big impact for our workforce; employers; and those with criminal records.

The legislation creates a process by which a person who has a criminal record may receive a "certificate of employment" (CQE).  The CQE would be issued by a judge to show that the individual has completed certain education, training, rehabilitation, etc. requirements. The certificate could then be used to show an employer that the courts do not believe that hiring the person would be a risk.

The certificate would be beneficial in two primary ways: it would provide, for lack of a better term, a letter of recommendation for the individual, while also providing some cover for the employer in terms of liability. Although there are restrictions in place to protect public safety, this legislation will be beneficial to a large number of individuals that have a criminal record but are ready to join the workforce. Stay tuned for status updates on this legislation!

Congrats!

Congratulations to Eagle Scout Michael on his hard work and dedication to helping our community, which has earned him the rank of Eagle Scout! Senator Petrowski and I had the pleasure of attending his Court of Honor Ceremony, and presenting him a citation last weekend. We appreciate your service and commitment to our community, Michael!
