This week, the Wisconsin State Assembly honored First Responders from across the state. Read more below to see who was honored from the 85th Assembly District!

On Tuesday, the Assembly met to discuss several proposals including legislation that supports the families of law enforcement officers who have lost their life in the line of duty; designates the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial Highway and provides signage for the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial and Education Center; and supports our young entrepreneurs.

Also during the floor session, we had the opportunity to recognize First Responders that serve communities throughout Wisconsin. Several months ago, I requested nominations for First Responder of the Year from the 85th Assembly District. After receiving multiple great nominations, we selected Sergeant Terrence Peterson from Everest Metro Police Department.

Sergeant Peterson has served Marathon County for over 25 years at various police departments. His work at the Everest Metro Police Department includes supporting the creation of the Awards and Recognition Committee, which recognizes officers for their outstanding work in our community, and acting as a liaison and participating in outreach with the community.

Most notably, Sergeant Peterson is the recipient of the Life Saving Award for measures he took to save an individual who was found without a pulse and not breathing. For all that Sergeant Peterson has done for our community, this award is a small token of appreciation; I was honored to recognize his achievements on Thursday.

World Homeless Day

Nearly ten years ago, homeless service providers throughout the world joined together to bring attention to an issue that is impacting millions of people on our planet: homelessness.

Considering that, in the United States alone, there are several different ways that governments define homeless, it is easy to understand how quantifying this problem across nations is a challenge. In an effort to raise awareness of the obstacles that the countries across the world face relating to homelessness, World Homeless Day was created. Since its creation in 2010, over 100 countries on six continents have recognized World Homeless Day, with citizens, public figures and government officials joining the fight against homelessness.

As a continuation of the Assembly's commitment to ending homelessness, as demonstrated by several bill packages that help support our homeless service providers in the work that they do every day to combat homelessness, we passed a Resolution declaring October 10th as World Homeless Day.
