Good news!

We received good news this week: we are projected to have an additional $753 million dollars more than earlier expected! With these dollars, we must continue the prudent fiscal policies that have strengthened our economy and made our state more prosperous. Suggestions that have been made for these dollars are: debt relief, tax relief or depositing in the rainy day fund. Let me know your thoughts on how to spend this money!

Budget motion: accepted

In addition to the budget numbers, there is other good news this week, specifically for our area! During one of the Joint Committee on Finance's meetings this week, they approved a budget motion that I authored, along with Senator Petrowski, which will provide more funding for Northcentral Technical College's welding and machining programs in county jails. Currently, the programs operate in Marathon County, however, leaders at NTC have indicated that this funding will allow them to expand into Lincoln, Langlade and Clark Counties.

The program has tremendous benefits for the community and inmates. It prevents crime and assists former inmates in getting back into the workforce,  therefore, giving former inmates the tools to succeed, provide for their family and give back to the community. I am so grateful for the work NTC is doing in our community, and I was pleased to be a part of expanding their reach.

DC Everest Idea School Visited the State Capitol on Friday this week and we had a great time touring the Capitol! I always enjoy showing students around our beautiful building and pointing out the unique history contained here. If you find yourself in Madison, feel free to stop by my office, 309 North. Thanks for visiting, DC Everest Idea School!

Assembly Floor Session

In addition to my budget motion passing, the Assembly floor session was particularly exciting for me this week, because I co-authored two pieces of legislation that were up for a vote: Assembly Bill (AB) 52 and Assembly Joint Resolution (AJR) 41. AB 52 allows 17 year old homeless, unaccompanied youth to enter into shelter facilities. This is common sense legislation that only serves to benefit our youth. I was proud to move this promptly through committee, and I applaud my colleagues for their prompt attention to the issue.

Additionally, AJR 41 proclaims May as Motherhood Month in Wisconsin. This Resolution was in collaboration with Representative Robyn Vining (D-Wauwatosa) in order to give mothers in our state the recognition that they deserve. Mothers play a critical role in molding our society and binding our communities together; they have a multi-faceted role as caretakers, business leaders, community advocates, and role models. Every life in our state is impacted by mothers, and we are due to recognize their contributions to society. I am pleased this Resolution passed unanimously.
