Capitol Updates from State Rep. Dave Considine

January 11, 2016

Dear friend,

Welcome to my monthly e-newsletter. I hope you find the information below helpful in keeping up-to-date on what's happening in the 81st District and our state government.

The legislature is now back in session and the Governor will be submitting his budget for our review next month. I will be carefully reviewing the Governor's budget to ensure that there is an adequate funding solution for our state's transportation infrastructure while still being fiscally responsible with taxpayer resources.

Additionally, my legislative priorities for the 2017-18 session include advancing school based mental health resources, authorizing the growing and processing of
industrial hemp, funding for rural schools, protecting the environment, and pursuing reforms in our corrections facilities to ensure the safety of both officers and inmates.

As always, please feel free to contact me anytime if you have questions, concerns, or thoughts you'd like to share with me. It is a pleasure to serve as your Representative in Madison.

Sincerely,

Rep. Dave Considine

81st Assembly District

Committee Assignments

For the 2017-18 session I will be serving on the following Assembly committees: Corrections, Education, and Tourism. I will also serve as the ranking Democrat on both the Agriculture and Mental Health Reform committees.

As in my first term, my experience as an educator, farmer, and active community member will prove vital when drafting and deliberating legislation in these subject areas.

I plan to continue listening to the constituents in my district and bringing their concerns to committee discussions. I’m looking forward to continuing to serve as a calm, rational voice for the 81st District in the Assembly.

Legislative Study Committee

This past summer I had the privilege of being selected to serve on a legislative study committee focused on the preservation of burial sites in Wisconsin. The main objective of this committee was to determine whether current statutes adequately balanced the interests of scientists, landowners, developers and others with an interest in a burial site, including those with a kinship interest and those with a general cultural, tribal or religious affiliation with the burial site.

The committee was comprised of both state legislators as well as subject matter experts from the general public. Over the course of 5 meetings, this committee listened to testimony from representatives of the historical society, scientists and anthropologists, tribal members of the Ho-Chunk Nation and others.

The result of these meetings is the following draft legislation that will be introduced during the upcoming legislative session. The bill updates how burial sites are categorized and cataloged and increases the minimum amount of land included around a burial site from 5 feet to 10 feet.
