Representative Lisa Subeck Joins Assembly Democrats’ Call for Legislative Action, Introduces COVID-19 Response Plan
MADISON – Today, Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison) and her Assembly Democratic colleagues introduced a COVID-19 Response Plan. The plan released today acknowledges that the steps taken when the Legislature convened in April were not enough, and further action is needed to fight COVID-19 and protect our health and safety and our economy. Critical action is needed, and the Legislature should immediately begin the necessary work of helping families and businesses across the state in the face of unprecedented challenges.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has upended our communities, economy, and our way of life. We currently have no clear statewide guidance, and are left with a patchwork of county and municipal orders, which may provide some protection but are not enough to prevent the spread of COVID-19 statewide,” said Rep. Subeck. “It is paramount that the legislature take action to create a framework for Wisconsin to move forward supporting our health and safety and our economic future.”
The Assembly Democrats’ plan increases access to healthcare, supports frontline healthcare workers, obtains needed federal funding, and extends public health emergencies to provide Gov. Evers with the tools he needs to combat COVID-19. Additionally, the plan expands low-interest, long term loans and grants for small businesses, offers support for child care workers, school employees, farms, and agricultural producers while implementing eviction protection for businesses and tenants, and also offers a tax-credit for frontline workers. Finally, the plan establishes universal vote by mail and provides resources for the Wisconsin Elections Commission for its implementation.
“Now, more than ever, the legislature needs to do everything possible to help the people of Wisconsin through this unprecedented public health crisis. Neither our health nor our economy can fully recover as long as uncontrolled spread of COVID-19 remains a significant threat,” said Rep. Subeck. “The Assembly Democrats’ plan acknowledges there is more work to be done beyond what the Governor and federal government have provided and that waiting to take meaningful action will only make the consequences of this crisis worse.”
