Affordable Care Act Repeal would have Devastating Consequences in Wisconsin

March 21, 2017

MADISON – Today, Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison) and other Wisconsin State Assembly and Senate Democrats sent a letter to members of the Wisconsin Congressional Delegation opposing the House Republican plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

“In the 2nd Congressional District alone, we would see 23,400 individuals lose their coverage and 449,600 individuals pay higher out-of-pocket costs for health care,” Rep. Subeck stated.  “According to the Congressional Budget Office, 24 million Americans will lose their health insurance.”

According to the Urban Institute, as many as 36,000 Americans could die if the ACA is repealed and those individuals are not able to obtain other health care coverage. However, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that for every 455 people who gained coverage across several states, one life was saved per year. Applying that figure to even a conservative estimate of 20 million losing coverage in the event of an ACA repeal yields an estimate of 43,956 deaths annually.

“Lives are at stake. Rather than flying blind with legislation that will lead to people needlessly dying for lack of health insurance, we need members of Congress to do the right thing and oppose repeal,” Rep. Subeck stated.
