Cyber Safety
October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month and the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is recognizing this important campaign and helping citizens protect themselves and their families. A safety tip with a different security theme will be provided each weekday throughout October via the Bureau of Consumer Protection’s Facebook and Twitter accounts. Read about "Stop. Think. Connect." and find more cyber safety information and resources here.

A shortage of Cybersecurity graduates is predicted by 2022! It is critical to encourage students to consider entering cyber-related degree programs to ultimately fill the variety of jobs that will be available. Join the Governor as he hosts a Cybersecurity Summit on Monday, October 16, 2017, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. Gain insight into the vast opportunities that exist with two and four year degree programs. Register for the summit and get started on a path to a successful cyber career.
In Progress Legislation
On Thursday, October 4th, the Committee on Ways and Means held a public hearing on Assembly Bill 343. During the public hearing I had the chance to testify in favor of this bill. AB 343 creates an individual income tax checkoff for the Firefighters Memorial Association, the proceeds of which support the construction, improvement, and maintenance of the firefighters memorial. The bill requires that an amount equal to the total amount of designations received, less the total cost of administering the income tax checkoff procedure, be transferred to the association.
Currently, there are eight permanent checkoffs to which taxpayers may make a designation. Current law prohibits the Department of Revenue from placing more than ten checkoffs, not including temporary checkoffs, on the income tax form. Current law also requires DOR to remove from the tax forms any checkoffs that do not generate at least an average of $50,000 of designations per year over the most recent three-year period. Formerly, a temporary checkoff for the firefighters memorial appeared on the tax forms, but it was removed by DOR because it failed to generate the required level of designations. The checkoff created in AB 343 would be a permanent checkoff.
