PLOVER — Stevens Point Chapter DAR members Barbara Jordanger, Judy Mason, Shirley Multhauf, Karen Trzebiatowski and Carol Vleeshouwers participated in the Wreaths Across America Day ceremony Dec. 14, 2013, at the Korean War Memorial in Plover. After the ceremony, members proceeded to Guardian Angel cemetery, and laid wreaths on the graves of 15 servicemen and servicewomen who had served in the armed forces of our country. Seven wreaths were donated by the Stevens Point chapter, and eight through the generosity of other community members.

In 2008, Congress voted unanimously to establish Wreaths Across America Day as a special day in which to remember and honor our veterans and their families, and to teach future generations what has been sacrificed by them to protect our freedoms. The ceremony in Plover was one of more than 800 held nationwide.

Speakers at the local ceremony included state Rep. Katrina Shankland and state Sen. Julie Lassa. The names of the veterans and the gravesites to be decorated by participating organizations were listed in the program instead of being read aloud, so all who attended could refer to the program and visit the graves of the veterans honored.
