Busy Start to a New Legislative Session

As you're probably aware, it's a busy time of year in Madison. The Governor released his budget to the legislature in early February. I'm currently in the process of evaluating his proposals and discussing important issues with residents of our district and other legislators. Also, I'm currently in the process of holding budget listening sessions across our district because I want to hear what's important to you as we move forward in this critical process. Please keep an eye out for future sessions on my legislative website: http://legis.wisconsin.gov/assembly/70/vandermeer
A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity to meet with our new Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary, Daniel Zimmerman. As Secretary, he is the chief advocate for the nearly 400,000 veterans of Wisconsin. In this capacity he's responsible for the leadership and management of the Department to include strategic and long-range planning initiatives aligning with the Department's vision. It was an encouraging meeting and I look forward to working with Mr. Zimmerman to address important issues facing Veterans in our state.

I have had the opportunity to greet and meet with a large number of constituents from our district in Madison over the past few weeks. The pictures included at the top of this message includes representatives from the Monroe and Wood County Farm Bureau Federation. If you're in Madison or have a group visiting the capitol, please make sure to let me know!

Right to Try Passes Assembly

Earlier this month I voted in favor of Assembly Bill 69, which will allow terminally ill patients to try potentially life-saving drugs that have not yet passed the full rigor of FDA approval. If the proposal is approved by the Senate and signed by the Governor, Wisconsin will become the 34th state since 2014 to pass such legislation including our Midwest neighbors in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio.

It is important to note that the legislation would only allow patients access to drugs that have passed the FDA’s Phase 1 testing, which tests for toxicity and immediate side effects. Additionally, the bill only allows access to these drugs to patients who have exhausted federally approved options to prolong or save their lives. Right to Try is a compassionate, common-sense reform that may give terminally ill patients a second chance on life. Improving the quality life of ill patients will make this a great success for Wisconsin.

Committee Assignments, 2017-1018 Session

  • Rural Development and Mining (Chair)
  • Veterans (Vice-Chair)
  • Agriculture
  • Consumer Protection
  • Mental Health
  • Science and Technology
  • Small Business Development

I am fortunate this session to have been granted the opportunity to chair an Assembly Committee. More so, I feel very fortunate to chair the Rural Development and Mining Committee. Rural communities are vital to our state and the 70th district. We plan to highlight and address issues facing rural Wisconsin residents as part of this committee and in many ways expand on the Rural Wisconsin Initiative launched last session by Republican Assembly Lawmakers.

In addition, I am especially honored to continue to serve as Vice Chair of the Veterans Committee. I cherish the opportunity to help the veterans of our state that have made tremendous sacrifices for us.
