State Capitol Report

Friends and Neighbors,

As we enter the holiday season, let's not only remember all the problems we face but all we have to be thankful for. As always, if you would like something to be included in future e-newsletters, or have a problem with a state relate related problem, just let me know at (608) 266-0455 or Rep.Ohnstad@legis.wi.gov.

As of November 1st, Wisconsin residents and families can apply for a 2018 health plan, renew their current plan or pick a new plan through the ACA’s Health Insurance Marketplace.
The Affordable Care Act enrollment in Wisconsin hit an all-time high in 2017 as more than 242,790 people in Wisconsin signed up for health coverage on the federal marketplace and more than 80 percent of all enrollees qualified for premium subsidies.

If you don't log in to update your application and enroll in a plan by December 15, 2017, you may be automatically enrolled in a 2018 plan.

The only way to make sure you have a 2018 plan that works for you, with the savings you qualify for, is to update your application, and view all your plan options for 2018.

2017-2018 Blue Books are here!

Every two years, Wisconsin produces an official Wisconsin Blue Book, a biennial manual of state government. Compiled by the Wisconsin Legislative Reference Bureau (LRB), the Blue Book is a gold mine of information about our state.
In its early years, the Blue Book was primarily a manual and reference book designed for legislators’ use. Over time, though, it has developed into a data and information source for the general public.
If you would like to request a complimentary copy of the 2017-2018 Wisconsin Blue Book, please provide your name and contact information HERE. I have received a limited number of Blue Books to send to constituents, so make sure to add your name to the list early!

For much of the month of October, I have been busy with floor sessions and committee work. On the Labor Committee, I spent the last month hearing from dozens of constituents opposing legislation weakening our environment in order to make way for toxic mining. I spoke against this bill on the Assembly floor.
Industrial Hemp
On Thursday, November 9th, the full Assembly gathered for our last floor session of the year. Of the many bills coming through the Assembly, Senate Bill 119, relating to the growth and processing of industrial hemp, passed unanimously.
I voted for this bill because I believe in the opportunities the hemp industry will create. However, it is ridiculous that farmers must receive a background check to grow it, while you can buy an automatic weapon at a gun show without one.
Lead & Drinking Water
Lead in our drinking water remains a huge problem in Wisconsin, with lead levels higher than in Flint, Michigan in many Wisconsin cities. Since the beginning of this session, I have been working with Mayor Antaramian on a bill which would make it possible to replace lead laterals.
As we were getting ready to introduce the bill, Senator Cowles (R-Green Bay), drafted a nearly identical bill, which I co-sponsored. This bill was amended and passed in the Senate and has been further amended in the Assembly. Hopefully this ends up being passed in some form. This is at least one step we can take in trying to get lead out of our drinking water.

Kenosha 40th Annual CROP Walk
On Sunday, October 15th, I attended the 40th Annual CROP walk. It was great seeing so many members of the community turn out to raise awareness on ending hunger.

Thanks To Our Veterans

I want to again thank all the men and women who have served in the military, as well as those currently serving.  Your commitment, your hard work, and your willingness to serve when and where you are called truly represents the best in all of us. Thank you for all you have done.

Thank you as well to the families of our veterans.  You serve our country in a different but incredibly important way.  Your service is truly appreciated.

I want to take this opportunity to remind all veterans that there are many services and benefits available to you through our state and federal government.  Please don't hesitate to call or email my office if you would like more information about these programs or if you are having trouble with them.  I am eager to help you on any state program. And I would be happy to connect you with the appropriate office for help if the program is managed at the federal level.
