Friends and Neighbors, As the year comes to a close, I want to encourage folks to reflect upon everything that has gone on in our state over the last twelve months and to look forward to everything coming up in 2019. I am honored to continue serving the people of Kenosha in the State Assembly for another term. I will continue to listen, work hard, and do my very best to represent your needs and interests in the 2019-20 legislative session. You may have noticed we have not put out an email for a few months. This is because of the “Rule of 49”, which prohibits us from communicating from our office prior to election. Now that this has passed, we will back to a more regular schedule. I am eager to get to work offering legislation that addresses the issues you feel are most important. I want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and all the best in the New Year, As always, if you would like something to be included in future e-newsletters, just let me know at (608) 266-0455 or Rep.Ohnstad@legis.wi.gov. Sincerely,
Tod Ohnstad
Lame Duck Special Session In the wake of the midterm election results last month, we took up a number of bills drafted by Legislative Republicans to rig the legislative process to their advantage. It’s disappointing my colleagues across the aisle, would bypass the opportunity to work with our new Governor-elect on real, bipartisan solutions, and move straight towards petty attempts at limiting his executive authority. By preventing Governor-elect Evers’ from using the full extent of his executive powers, Legislative Republicans are using their power grab to negatively impact many of the state agencies and their programs. State agencies will not be able to operate their programs and services freely, many of which are offered to constituents across the state. Republicans are also willing to subvert the system of checks and balances in our state by gutting Attorney General-elect, Josh Kaul, from his responsibilities. In doing so, Republicans would appoint their own special counsel, at the expense of taxpayers, for legal matters, as well as blocking Evers and Kaul from pulling Wisconsin out of the federal lawsuit to overturn the Affordable Care Act Despite opposition from the public, it seems Republicans would rather serve themselves than the people of Wisconsin. I hope you will continue to stay engaged in our political process and the important decisions that will be facing our state in the coming months. |
