Statement: Democrats’ Constitutional Runaround
July 16, 2019
Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) released the following statement concerning the Democrats press conference on legislation to circumvent the Wisconsin Constitution.
“We have proven that in divided government, a Republican legislature can pass a budget on time and have a Democratic governor sign it into law. Rather than handing over our constitutional duty to an unelected, unaccountable board of bureaucrats appointed by politicians, redistricting should continue to be the responsibility of the legislature and governor. As elected officials, it’s our responsibility to try to find consensus and do what’s best for Wisconsin.
“When the time comes for the redistricting process to begin after the U.S. Census, Republicans and Democrats should each put forward a map that can be openly debated. Why would we not allow another opportunity to find consensus to happen?
“I take issue with the Democrats’ attack on the legislative maps that federal courts ruled constitutional. Their pursuit to overturn them was a waste of time and taxpayer money.
“Democrats blame their minority status on gerrymandering but the reality is they were beaten fair and square. In 2018, Senator Baldwin won 30% of the seats held by Assembly Republicans. Wisconsin has ticket-splitters and Assembly Republicans simply have better candidates with a better message that resonates with the voters.
“Republicans won with court-drawn maps in the 1990’s and 2000’s as well as in the 2010’s. The Democrats’ efforts are based on sour grapes because they haven’t won in 30 years no matter how the maps were drawn.”
