Curbing DOT Waste

Have you ever been driving down the highway and wondered, "what are those railroad crossing arms doing at this on-ramp?" Or, "why all the digital message boards?" Well, I'm here to tell you that they are nothing more than a product of government bureaucrats wasting your tax dollars.

Yesterday I circulated a bill that would end this type of wasteful spending in three areas: highway on-ramp gates, digital message boards (DMS) and traffic cameras (CCTV). Click here to read more.

While I understand that these items may have their time and place, I contend that the size and scope of the DOT's multi-year plan for installing these unnecessary items statewide is excessive and wasteful. Even more frustrating is that despite the current, dismal state of our transportation fund, DOT officials continue to opt for more expensive options despite the availability of more cost-effective alternatives.

It's time our agencies start to tighten their belts and cut the frills, just like you and I and families around this state have to do. I trust my colleagues will support my efforts to do just that with this bill.

  • DMS (side mount) - $80-90,000 each

  • DMS (overhead) - $180-190,000 each

  • CCTV - $55,000 each

  • Gates - $12-15,000 each
