Foxconn Bringing New Business Oppurtunities

On Tuesday, I was in Green Bay with the Governor announcing a new way for Wisconsin companies to benefit from Foxconn’s $10 billion investment in our future.

Wisconsin businesses can now register on www.WISupplyChainMarketplace.com to connect with multimillion dollar companies, including Foxconn, looking to meet their supply chain needs.

An analysis conducted by the University of Wisconsin–Madison Center for Research on the Wisconsin Economy reports that for every $1 in state subsidies, Foxconn will return nearly $4. The report also estimates that Foxconn's $10 billion investment in the Wisconsin economy will produce a ripple effect creating 32,000 to 39,000 jobs across the state. You can read the full report here.

#1 in Quality Health Care

Wisconsin ranks first in the nation for quality health care, according to a report issued this week by the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). You can read more about how Wisconsin has been successfully providing quality health care in both rural and urban settings here.

I’m currently working on multiple bills that will bring health care costs down, while maintaining the high quality of care that Wisconsin families deserve.

Eliminating an Entire Tax

Yesterday, the Joint Finance Committee voted to eliminate an entire tax. For the first time since 1931 the state is on track to eliminate its portion of your property tax.

On Monday the Joint Finance Committee will take up K-12 education and on September 5 they plan to take up transportation and conclude their action on the budget. If this schedule holds, it’s likely that I will have the opportunity to vote on the state budget in the Assembly during the week of September 11.

Sturgeon Season Opens Sept 2

Anglers interested in pursuing a big, hard-fighting fish will want to try their hand at fishing for lake sturgeon--armed with a stout rod and heavy line.

The hook and line season for lake sturgeon opens Sept. 2 and runs through Sept. 30 on several major river stretches for a fish that can grow to more than 6 feet long and exceed 150 pounds. The world record taken by hook and line was a 170-pound, 10-ounce lake sturgeon pulled from Yellow Lake in Burnett County in 1979.

I have introduced legislation that would allow the non-profit organization, Sturgeon for Tomorrow, Inc. to raise additional funds for the Winnebago System sturgeon management program and other sturgeon management and research projects by annually raffling off five Upriver Lakes lake sturgeon spearing certificates called “Governor’s Tags.”  The certificates include a sturgeon spearing license and an applicable carcass tag. You can learn more about my bill and track its progress here.

Back to School

As back to school season revs up Outagamie County is still collecting school supplies for needy students. If you are interested in donating or volunteering please visit their Back To School webpage.

If you’re preparing to send a college student off, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has tips for protecting them from identity theft:

Don't:

  • Carry your Social Security card in your wallet.

  • Shop online or pay bills on a public computer, through an unsecured website, or on an unsecured Wi-Fi network.

  • Give solicitors any personal financial information or your Social Security number.

  • Post personal details on social media.

Do:

  • Keep your room locked and keep documents containing personally identifiable information out of sight, preferably in a lockbox.

  • Make sure that your devices are set to require a passcode or fingerprint to login.

  • Shred pre-approved credit card offers and any unnecessary bills and paperwork that contain personally identifiable information.

  • Put mail directly in U.S. Postal Service mailboxes instead of unsecured campus mailboxes.
