Voter Data

I’ve heard from a number of constituents concerned about the request of the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity for information about voters in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin state statutes charge the Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) with carrying out elections and maintaining voter data. State law requires information about voters classified as “public” to be released for a fee. Public information is limited to name, address, and the dates of each election a voter participated in.

Some confidential voter data held by WEC may only be released under limited circumstances to law enforcement agencies or agencies of other states involved in elections. Confidential information includes birthdate, driver license number, the last four digits of a Social Security number if the voter did not possess a driver license or state ID card when they registered to vote, and any accommodations needed by a voter at a polling location. Wisconsin does not collect or maintain records about who individuals vote for, voter party preference, or voter gender.

The Wisconsin Elections Commission has determined that the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity does not meet the requirements for the release of confidential information. WEC will also charge the Presidential Advisory Commission $12,500 for release of the public portion of the voter data. The full statement of the WEC administrator can be accessed online here: http://elections.wi.gov/node/5135

I support current laws pertaining to the restrictions on releasing personal voter data and I believe that any efforts to address voter fraud are best handled at the state and local level.

Spring Survey Snapshot

As the state budget process begins to wind down I’m carefully considering the opinions you shared with me through my spring constituent survey. A summary of all survey questions will be sent out later this summer. In the meantime, here are a few charts summarizing the responses related to the budget and transportation:

Please note: This was not a scientific, independently conducted survey, so the numbers below are only a reflection of the surveys that were returned. Some people only answered a few questions, some completed the entire survey, and some wrote comments, especially if the available options didn't represent their views. Some people told me they thought the questions were biased, but my only purpose was to get feedback from you and encourage interaction between us, so I believe it served its purpose. A big part of democracy is feedback, and I always enjoy listening to my constituents.

I represent about 57,000 people in the 56th Assembly District. This survey is one of the ways I solicit opinions and ideas from the public. A copy of the survey was mailed to over 25,000 households. More than 850 responses were submitted via mail and over the internet. If this were a scientific survey, the margin of error would be a less than three and a half percent.

Explore Wisconsin's Private Colleges

In addition to the world class public universities in our state, we’re fortunate to have two dozen private, non-profit colleges for Wisconsin students to explore. July 10-15, 2017 is Private College Week with events scheduled in every corner of the state. To learn more and plan a trip to tour one or more of the campuses visit: http://www.wisconsinsprivatecolleges.org/visit/register-private-college-week-visit
