The 2017-2018 legislative session has begun. As we approach a
new year of opportunity and challenge, I look forward to hearing
from you and working with my colleagues to move our state
forward. I hope you'll call on me when you read news stories or
talk with friends about an issue and want more information to
help you make your own decisions on policies. You'll find my
office contact information at the bottom of this newsletter.
Great Economic News for
Wisconsin
This biennial budget process is starting off with great news and
proves that our reforms are working: the non-partisan Fiscal
Bureau reports that Wisconsin will take in $454.6 million more
than was estimated last fall in tax collections between now and
through the next biennial budget. We will end the 2016-2017 fiscal year
with a positive net balance of $362.2 million, which is $322.4
million higher than the previous estimate. This is great news
for Wisconsin!
The governor has said his priority is to increase funding to
public education at all levels, continue tax relief, and reward
work. I agree with those goals, and I would add that we need to
focus on how to fund transportation, as well. This work is
always challenging, but be assured that we believe in crafting
budgets with prudent fiscal planning so our taxpayers and the
state continue to do well. Please feel free to let me know your
priorities for the upcoming state budget deliberations. My job
is to help see that your money is used wisely, and your input is
important.

Committee Assignments
My Assembly committee assignments for this legislative session:
Colleges and Universities (Chair)
Campaigns and Elections
Financial Institutions
Health
Housing and Real Estate
Workforce Development
This will be my second term serving as Chair of Colleges and
Universities, but I am new to the Health and Campaigns and
Elections committees. Serving on committees increases my
knowledge of these subject areas and the legislation pertaining
to them. In addition, I have my own legislation and ideas to
shepherd through the process. While I don't serve on the Joint
Committee on Finance, which is responsible for the state budget,
I closely monitor the budget and work with my colleagues in both
houses to support my priorities for the state as a whole.
Balancing these activities with the other responsibilities of
this office is a privilege, and I appreciate the opportunity to
be your voice in Madison.
Wisconsin Technical College System Legislative Seminar
Last week, I spoke to trustees and presidents of the Wisconsin
Technical College System at their biennial Legislative Seminar
in Madison. We had a good discussion on a variety of topics, and
I appreciated the questions asked by people who serve different
parts of our state. Thank you for the opportunity to visit with
you!
Inauguration
The
Senate and Assembly both held inauguration ceremonies on January
3, 2017.
Below is a picture of me signing the oath book, which every
Representative since the founding of the state has signed.
