The legislature's work on the biennial budget is now in
progress. While I don't serve on the Joint Finance Committee (JFC), I am
monitoring their briefings, reviewing the governor's budget, and
discussing the budget with my constituents and colleagues. I work with
JFC Co-Chair
John Nygren on a weekly basis to stay informed and offer
perspectives from my district. Ultimately, the Assembly and
Senate each will take one vote on the entire budget. Here are
the dates:

A note on the structural deficit: Last
session's responsible budgeting closed our $3.6 billion deficit,
leaving Wisconsin with a budget surplus. The governor invested
that surplus in taxpayers, not more government programs. Revised
revenue estimates will be out in May, and are very likely to
show Wisconsin in an even more financially stable situation. In
fact, if the governor's budget passed as written, Wisconsin
would have the second lowest structural deficit in the last 10
budget cycles. To review the 2013-15 General Fund
Budget information from the non-partisan Legislative Fiscal
Bureau, go
