As I serve the 56th district, I have a great staff and interns
that are part of my team to serve you. I asked each of them to
write about themselves so you can get to know Team Murphy and
the people that you interact with when you contact my office.
Diane Handrick (Research Assistant)
I have worked for Dave since he began serving in the Assembly in
2013, but I have been in the Capitol since 1999. Working in
state government is interesting every day, and I’m still
learning about many aspects of our state. Ironically, I didn’t
intend to work in government or politics. I thought I’d work in
publishing or marketing! I grew up in Superior, and majored in
English at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN. My first
job after graduating took me to Wausau.
I have also been a communications assistant for Wisconsin Relay,
a retail manager, and, when I lived in Minocqua, I worked at a
resort and a jewelry store. In addition to working for Dave, my
favorite things about this job are that it’s different every day
and that I get to help people get the answers they need. Away
from the office, I stay busy with my three children, lots of
family and friends, travel, reading and playing the piano.

are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” –Ralph Waldo

David Boardman
(Legislative Assistant)
I have
been a part of Team Murphy for about two years. I started
interning in Dave's office, did a Limited Term Employment
position in another legislative office, and then I was hired
full-time as a Legislative Assistant by Dave. I grew up in
Wauwatosa and completed my undergraduate degree at UW-Stevens
Point. I'm a proud Pointer alumni, but I will soon be a Badger
alumni, too, once I complete my Masters in Public Affairs at UW-Madison.
As a legislative assistant, one of my favorite parts about the
job is to work with constituents. Whether it is talking to you
about your opinion on state issues or helping a constituent navigate
state government, it is always a pleasure. I also enjoy working
with Dave to create legislation and conduct research on new
ideas. Outside of work and school, I enjoy playing soccer, piano,
and traveling!
Troy Howard (Intern)
I
grew up on the Northwest side of Appleton, Wisconsin. In 2015, I
graduated from Appleton West High at the top of my class. I met
Dave while working at Community First Credit Union as a finance
intern. When I am not working at the office, I am studying
finance and real estate at the Wisconsin School of Business in
Madison, Wisconsin. I think Dave and I get along so well because
of our mutual passion for personal finance. In the future, I
want to help others make the best possible financial decisions
for them and their family. After working with Dave, Diane, and
David for the past year, I feel confident saying that I made a
great decision by joining the Murphy team.
Favorite quote: “A society grows great when
old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit
in.”
Evan Thomsen (Intern)
I grew up in the district living just
outside of Dale. For high school, I attended Neenah and
graduated Summa Cum Laude. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I am double majoring in Economics and Political
Science, and I will graduate after only three semesters of
enrollment. Although I haven't spent much time at Madison, I am
actively involved in numerous student organizations: Be the
Match on Campus, the Global Economic Forum, Pre-Law Society, the
Alexander Hamilton Society, and the Wisconsin International
Review. I was an active member of the Civil Air Patrol, the
official Air Force Auxiliary, which is based at Appleton
International Airport while I attended high school. Through this
program, I earned my Private Pilot’s License, traveled to Hong
Kong, and met Dave when I was promoted to the grade of Cadet
Colonel, the pinnacle of the program. I am currently studying
for the LSAT and hope to gain entrance into a law school with
the long-term goal of being a lawyer.
