Committee Update

Health Committee

  • The Health Committee had a busy week this past week. A public hearing was held on Wednesday, October 16th. The hearing started at 12:30 and didn't finish until past 6:00 p.m.. While the hearing was long, I am excited by the bills discussed during it. There were two bills that were discussed that I believe will be great for our district in the long term. The first bill, AB 317, is related to raising awareness for Lyme Disease. The second bill, AB 313, seeks to establish a committee to study tick-borne diseases. Both of these bills would increase public health and safety in our district.

Quilts of Valor Ceremony

2019.10.07_NecedahVFW_QuiltsOfValor2.jpgMembers of the Necedah VFW Post 10231 received Quilts of Valor in a ceremony last week. For those that do not know, a Quilt of Valor is a handmade quilt whose purpose is two fold: to help comfort and heal those who have been touched by war, and to honor those who have dedicated their lives to protecting our country. While I unfortunately was not able to attend, I wanted to thank our veterans for their service, sacrifice, and valor in serving our nation in combat, and I wanted to thank the wonderful volunteers who made these beautiful quilts.

Spotlight on Service

Late in August I began asking folks around the 50th Assembly District for nominations for the First Responder of the Year Award. My office was pleasantly surprised by the number of  individuals being nominated. I was blown away by the many selfless individuals who volunteer their time and talents in order to serve our communities. Over the next few weeks, I would like to introduce you to more of the outstanding First Responders we have in our District.

This week meet: Phil Raupp, a 25 year veteran of Reedsburg Ambulance.  During that time, he has been a training officer, assistant chief, and was the director of the ambulance service. Phil was a key player in taking Reedsburg Ambulance from the Advanced EMT level to the Paramedic Level. He was instrumental in developing the plan, working through the finances, and delivering information to the surrounding communities about the paramedic program. Phil has worked his way up from an EMT Basic to a Critical Care Paramedic.

A excerpt from one of his nomination forms reads: "Phil deeply cares about EMS, the people in EMS and the patients they serve. Phil provides patient care to his patients and treats them like he would treat his own family. When not providing patient care, Phil takes time for his fellow employees of the ambulance service. Phil is known as the person who will always take time to talk and listen. Phil takes the time to listen when his coworkers need someone to talk to, and always makes sure they receive the help they need. "

Phil's commitment to helping his community as well as his fellow first responders is outstanding, and I am thankful that we have such a great first responder serving our district.
