Video Update from the Capitol

Most people are familiar with calling 9-1-1 in emergencies for police, fire, or EMTs, but as part of the N11 codes, Wisconsin participates in another number available for those who are struggling with housing options, need disaster relief, or are in a personal crisis. 2-1-1 Wisconsin provides free, confidential referral information, and support to people across our communities.

By dialing 2-1-1, or visiting the website, you can be linked to essential community resources 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The 2-1-1 program connects you with local specialists who have access to a comprehensive database to provide information on supplemental food and nutrition programs, shelter and housing options, access to mental health services, education options, and more.

2-1-1 is supported as a public/private partnership in much of our state with United Way being one of the major donors to help provide this program. For more information on 2-1-1 Wisconsin and the services it provides, call 2-1-1 or visit their website.

Thanks for watching, and have a great Wisconsin week!

February 7th Legislative Chlidren's Caucus Meeting

Earlier this week, the Children's Caucus hosted the La Crosse Area Family Collaborative (LAFC) for a presentation on their neighborhood-based social work program. The LAFC works with the school district’s teachers and social workers, along with city law enforcement to help identify and proactively engage families in better meeting their needs. The presentation was given by Jason Witt, La Crosse Health and Human Services Director, Isaac Hoffman, LAFC Director, and Dan Ulrich with the La Crosse Police Department. Visit the Children's Caucus website for more information, including the PowerPoint presentation or to watch the full video.

Highway 82 Bridge Construction

Recently, construction began on a new bridge over the Wisconsin River on Highway 82. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation hired Lunda Construction of Black River Falls to construct the $19 million bridge.

Brenda Schoenfeld, the DOT project supervisor, said she was unsure of the age of the current bridge linking Adams and Juneau counties. However, the department determined it was more cost effective to replace the bridge.

The new bridge is to be completed in October of 2019. Schoenfeld said during that time Highway 82 will remain open, but workers will direct traffic across the bridge. One lane of traffic will be switched to the new bridge during the summer of 2019.

At the same time as the bridge work, County Highway Z which intersects Highway 82 at the bridge on the Adams County side will be realigned. During that work, tentatively scheduled for April and May of this year, County Z will be closed to traffic from Highway 82 to Fern Avenue. However, traffic can use County Z to reach Point Bluff Resort, which is at the corner of Highway 82 and Z.

For the latest updates on the bridge project check the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's 511 website.
