Video Update from the Capitol

During the State of the State last week, Governor Walker announced an ambitious agenda for 2018. One initiative from this plan is to bolster Wisconsinís rural communities and farming families.

This plan will create a $50 million a year Rural Economic Development Fund that gives long-term investment to rural communities.

  • Grants will be available for economic development projects in counties with a population of less than 155 persons per square mile. This would include 56 Wisconsin counties.

  • The Dairy 30x20 program hit their goal 4 years ahead of time, so the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection has been directed to repurpose $200,000 from that program to offer scholarships to encourage students to take agriculture-related courses at Wisconsin Tech colleges or the UW-Madison College of Agriculture.

  • Additionally, to improve Wisconsinís soil and water quality, an additional $500,000 will be given to the Producer-Led Watershed Protection Grant program each year over biennium.

I am happy to see plans to support rural communities, families, and districts just like my own.
Thanks for watching, and have a great Wisconsin week!

Upcoming Candlelight Hikes

Interested in experiencing the beauty of a Wisconsin winter night? Ski or hike along a trail illuminated by candles! More than 20 candlelight events are scheduled at state park, forest and other DNR properties across Wisconsin over the next three weekends.

The events are held on generally easy trails, illuminated by candles every few yards. Park and forest crews and volunteers from local park friends groups may put out as many as 300 to 400 candles on a trail.

A few of the properties offer only candlelight-lit ski trails or only candlelit hiking or snowshoeing trails, but if there is sufficient snow many properties offer both.

In addition to putting out candles, many parks have bonfires, and some have warming houses open. At some events, groups provide refreshments such as hot chocolate and snacks. Any fee or donation accepted by the groups are used to support the property.

You can check on the details of each event by going to the Department of Natural Resources website. Regular park and trail fees apply for the events unless otherwise noted.

While most events will not be cancelled due to lack of snow, they still could be cancelled due to icy conditions, extreme cold or severe wind chill, so people are encouraged to check the website, follow the DNR Twitter feed, or call properties directly to confirm the event will be held if severe weather is in the forecast.

Logan Moyle Joins the Rank of Eagle Scout

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to present Logan Moyle of Ripon Boy Scout Troop 735 with a citation for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Scout project, Logan constructed stone stairs along a steep hiking trail in South Woods near Ripon so that members of the public can enjoy the scenery. Congrats, Logan!
