Video Update from the Capitol

With the holiday season right around the corner, many people use this time to donate generously to charities. Unfortunately, this goodwill can open the market to scammers who use fake charities to gather funds.

Before making a contribution this holiday season, be aware of pushy phone and internet based requests for payments. Here are a few tips you can use to consider when making a donation:

Ask a solicitor to explain the purpose of the organization, how much of the donation goes to fund-raising expenses, and whether you will be sent a receipt.

Donate to charities who you trust and are well established.

Be aware of unsolicited requests, especially those sent by text or email.

And finally, never give out a check to an individual solicitor. Write out the check to the name of the organization or use a credit card.

For more information or to file a complaint, visit the Wisconsin Department of Trade and Consumer Protection website.

Thanks for watching, and have a great Wisconsin week!

The Big Bundle Up!

Each year, the Department of Tourism sponsors a clothing drive to help residents stay warm in the winter months. This drive invites Wisconsin residents and visitors to donate new or gently used warm winter items to those in need.

For seven years now, the Department of Tourism has teamed up with chambers of commerce, convention and visitor bureaus, Wisconsin Welcome Centers, the Executive Residence, and businesses around the state to serve as collection sites. More than 60 partners and organizations are participating this year!

To date the Big Bundle Up has collected 103,400 items.

The campaign runs through January 2, 2018. To find drop-off locations in your area, visit their website

Winter Driving Conditions

With snow expected this weekend, it is important to check the road conditions before you travel.

The Department of Transportation's 511 winter roads condition list provides updated winter weather alerts to make sure drivers are aware of any backups or unsafe road conditions.

Expanding Rural Broadband Access

Expanding access to reliable, high-speed internet access to rural areas has been a top priority this year. Recently, Governor Walker sent a letter to Federal officials urging them to allow the use of TV White Space to broadcast high speed internet to areas that cannot be reached by regular Wi-Fi signals.

This new technology has the capability to deliver internet that operates four times faster and reaches sixteen times farther than Wi-Fi. It uses a frequency that allows for it to move through objects like hills and foliage that are present in many of our rural areas. It is currently estimated that TV White Space can reach 80% of the underserved rural population in Wisconsin. This type of access would be life changing for rural businesses and families.

On behalf of those currently living without access, we are trying to do everything we can to make this technology available to those who need it most.
