Video Update from the Capitol

Over the last several months, the Speakerís Task Force on Foster Care has traveled across the state to get input and feedback from the general public and those who are involved in the foster care system.

In our six meetings, we heard from county child protective services, non-profits that work with families, adoptive and foster families, biological parents, K-12 and Higher Education, the courts and foster youth.

Our number one goal is to achieve permanency for the over 7,000 kids in foster care.
We have found areas in licensing and the court system that can be made more effective.

Education is the key to success for all our kids, but many foster kids make frequent school changes and face challenges to meet school district requirements for graduation. This has to be addressed first for us to then support and encourage our foster youth to seek post-secondary training.

Another challenge that should be addressed is aging out of the system. Can you imagine if you were an 18 year old and had no home or family to turn to for support and advice?

These are the tough issues weíve been hearing about, and members of the Task Force will introduce bills soon that address these issues. For more information on the Speakerís Task Force on Foster Care visit, our website.

Thanks for watching, and have a great Wisconsin week!

Local Business Spotlight: Badger Mining Corporation

On behalf of the Wisconsin State Assembly, I recognized Tiffany Thoma as our Hometown Hero during our November 2nd floor date. Tiffany Thoma is the Environmental Team Leader for Badger Mining Corporation (BMC) and helps coordinate their annual deer gun hunt for people with disabilities, called Special Hunts.

Special Hunts originally started on reclaimed mining land in St. Marie in Green Lake County. Since then, the program has expanded into four counties. Special Hunts is in its 16th year and has helped over 80 people experience the tradition of hunting in Wisconsin by providing them with special equipment and making opportunities to go out when temperatures are milder and mobility around the field is easier.

Thank you to Tiffany Thoma, Brandon Hess, Nick Bartol, Andy Chikowski, Loren Parker, and James Crowley for coming to Madison to accept this award.

For more information on the Special Hunts program or Badger Mining and their services, visit their website.
