Video Update from the Capitol

This week, I was honored to receive a public service award from the Wisconsin Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Social workers do the hard work of serving and strengthening relationships within diverse populations. Schools, hospitals, emergency rooms, mental health clinics, group homes, our county services for child welfare, and more utilize social workers to help people solve and cope with their problems, and advocate for their needs.

I have learned a lot about this profession through my involvement with the Speakerís Task Force on Foster Care and other early childhood related work Iíve been involved in. Social workers often have to deal with tough situations and second hand trauma.

I appreciate that they recognized my role in helping their cause, but it is the dedicated social workers who are instrumental in the work they do with our families and communities. I will continue to advocate for those working in this profession.

Thanks for watching, and have a great Wisconsin week!

October 28th is Drug Take Back Day

When used properly, prescription medications offer relief. However, if they end up in the wrong hands they can be dangerous, and if poured down the drain they can contaminate our water supply.

In Wisconsin, more than two-thirds of people who have abused prescription painkillers got them illegally through someone they know, or even when browsing through a friendís medicine cabinet. This is why I introduced legislation this session to authorize hospice staff to dispose of controlled substances upon a patientís death. Ensuring that hospice staff can properly dispose of these drugs when a patient dies will help prevent the drugs from falling into the wrong personís possession where they may be used to start or feed an addiction.

Wisconsin Department of Justice holds drug take back events in both the spring and fall of each year. At these events, you can dispose of controlled and uncontrolled substances, over-the-counter medications, ointments, patches, creams, vials, and pet medications in a safe and responsible way. For more information on drug take back locations and proper disposal of medications, visit doseofrealitywi.gov.

Halloween Weekend

Don't be scared...Be prepared! Halloween Safety Tips

It's that time of year when ghosts and witches will be roaming neighborhoods looking for treats. Before those princesses and superheroes are ready to start trick-or-treating, here are a few tips to help you and your families have a happy and safe Halloween;

  • Children under 12 should not trick-or-treat alone
  • Children over the age of 12 should walk in groups or with a trusted adult
  • Only go to well lit homes and never accept rides from strangers
  • Hold a flashlight or a light stick and have reflective tape on costumes or bags so drivers can see you.

Before eating any Halloween candy, an adult should examine all treats to check for tampering and choking hazards. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers. For more Halloween safety tips, click here.

Local Business Spotlight: EuroPlast, Ltd.

Harald Zacharias, the President of EuroPlast, and Paul Bechwar, the COO, gave me and Representative Ripp a tour around their world-class plastic injection molding company in Endeavor.

As one of a handful of sports cap enclosure manufacturers, they have developed a successful niche with custom injection molding customers across a diverse cross-section of industries.

EuroPlast, Ltd. was recently purchased by Jim Grafft, CEO of Certified Parts Corporation in Janesville and former owner of Arctic Cat. He bought EuroPlast, Ltd. with the intention to restore it to its original excellence, keep the company in Wisconsin, and retain as many of the original employees as possible.

Now with strong financial backing and leadership, a talented and growing team, and the addition of these new product lines, EuroPlast, Ltd. is looking forward to continuing this growth pattern in the coming years. They have strong plans to grow the business and expand their workforce in the future and will be incorporating an apprenticeship program in the coming year.

Thank you for sharing your story and good luck as you grow in Endeavor, Westfield and the rest of Wisconsin!

For more information on EuroPlast, Ltd. and their services, visit their website.
