Assembly Floor Day

Button_InSession.jpg

The Assembly met on the floor this week to vote on several pieces of legislation. Here are a few of the bills that were passed:

Assembly Bill 78 Relating to the registration and operation of vehicles defined as autocycles.

Assembly Bill 206 Relating to the regulation of hemp, providing an exemption from emergency rule procedures, granting rule-making authority, and making an appropriation.

Assembly Bill 434 Relating to the issuance by the Department of Revenue of retail alcohol beverage permits for motor vehicle racetrack grounds, authorizing caterers to make retail sales of alcohol beverages on racetrack grounds, and hours for retail sales by brewers. AB 434, which was recently voted out of the Committee on State Affairs, which I chair, received unanimous support in the full Assembly.

Building Commission Tour of Camp Randall at UW-Madison

As the Vice-Chair of the Wisconsin State Building Commission, I joined several of my colleagues this week to tour the UW-Madison football field, Camp Randall. At last month's meeting, UW-Madison requested the authority to reconstruct the south end zone that will replace approximately half of the bleacher seating and add field-level club space, lodge level premium club space and terrace club space. The scheduled renovation will start in November 2020 and given the compressed time frame to avoid impacting scheduled games this project will be finished in 10 months. We also had the opportunity to meet Athletic Director Barry Alveraz to discuss the project overview and why this project is important to the University. A big thank you to UW-Athletics for having us!

Florence County Declared a 'Second Amendment Sanctuary'

On Tuesday, Florence County became the first county in Wisconsin to designate itself as a "Second Amendment Sanctuary," taking a strong stance against any potential state gun control legislation. The resolution passed is direct push-back to the red-flag legislation that was supported by Governor Evers and several democratic lawmakers. By being a Second Amendment Sanctuary County, the citizens would follow the laws that are deemed constitutional, given and set by the county. The resolution lists a number of reasons why Florence County decided to become a Second Amendment Sanctuary County and was passed by the board unanimously. Thank you, Florence County for protecting our second amendment rights!

Wisconsin County Forest Association Meeting

This week, I had the opportunity to meet with the new Wisconsin County Forest Association Executive Director Rebekah Luedtke. Rebekah brings a wealth of forestry and wildland fire experience to this position, with 14 years of working for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Divison of Forestry. She began her new position in October and succeeds Jane Severt who is retiring after over 12 years as WCFA Executive Director.

WCFA represents the forestry interests of its 29 member counties with lands enrolled under Wisconsin's County Forest Law. Collectively these counties manage over 2.4 million acres of forest lands, the largest public ownership in Wisconsin. The focus of the Wisconsin County Forests is to ensure the long-term health and sustainability of forest ecosystems while providing benefits to the public.
