Rep. Zimmerman Congratulates Secretary Sheila Harsdorf on Appointment

Madison, WI Today Governor Walker appointed State Senator Sheila Harsdorf (R-River Falls) to serve as secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP). Senator Harsdorf becomes the first woman to head DATCP in the department's 88-year history.

“Sheila is an extraordinarily bright and capable person who I know cares deeply about doing a good job” said State Representative Shannon Zimmerman (R-River Falls). I have known her for more than a decade, and can say from firsthand experience that she did an outstanding job as a State Senator, and she will be just as excellent as Secretary of DATCP.”

Senator Harsdorf graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1978 with a Bachelor’s Degree in animal science and returned to River Falls to become a loan officer for the Production Credit Association while dairy farming part-time. Two years later she and her brother Jim became partners in the family business.

In 1988 she won her first race to the 30th Assembly District, serving in that capacity from 1989 to 1998, including on the Assembly Agriculture Committee.  She took two years off to work on the family farm, returning to politics by beating an eight-year incumbent to win the 10th State Senate seat in 2001.

“Nobody is more qualified or deserving of this position” said Rep. Zimmerman. “We all know she is going to do great and I look forward to working with Sheila in her new capacity.”
