The State of the State

Hello,

    A little over a year after the start of this session, we reflect on how the state is doing. Let me tell you, things are looking good for the people of Wisconsin. Don't just take my word for it; Governor Walker spoke about all the exciting things happening in our state and some exciting opportunities that lie ahead during his State of the State address yesterday.

    Unemployment reached 3%, the state property tax was eliminated, and tuition was frozen for a sixth consecutive year. Many across the state are saving money, and the Governor is encouraging new investments, especially in rural areas. Sparsity aid for schools, economic development funds for rural businesses, and an expansion of Internet access are what make me excited. Individuals like you in my district will feel the effects of the programs proposed yesterday. You can see more about my reaction below.

State of the State Reaction

    It was a lot of fun listening to the Governor's State of the State address and reacting to it. You can watch a video on my thoughts and read more about my reaction in a press release I recently sent out. Please share any thoughts you have on the speech with me.

History Day Meeting

    Wednesday was even busier with many advocacy groups visiting the capitol. Amy Meyer (left) and Alex Brendemuehl from the Manitowoc County Historical Society paid me a visit during the Wisconsin Historical Society Legislative Day in the Capitol.

    We were able to discuss different issues impacting our community and connect over the painting in my office (behind us) of the Head Chief of Mixed Manitowoc, Waumegesako. I really enjoyed their visit!

Agriculture Day in the Capitol

    I sat down with constituents as a part of Agriculture Day in the Capitol on Wednesday, as well. The constituents spoke on a variety of topics, from wolf management, to sparsity aid for rural schools, to funding for the Wisconsin livestock identification consortium.

    I am grateful for both both perspectives I heard from during these two visits. Agriculture is a vital part of our economy here in Wisconsin, and I love to support farmers any way I can. It was also fun to learn from the experts who visited me about what makes Wisconsin cheese a slice above the rest!

Joint Listening Sessions Jan. 29th

    Representative Tittl and Senator LeMahieu will be hosting joint listening sessions in the 25th Assembly district on Monday, Jan. 29th. The listening sessions will take place in Hilbert and Valders. Details are below.

  • The 15th annual Wisconsin Governor's Business Plan Contest is now accepting applications online for 2018. Submit your entry before Jan. 31st.
  • January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Government officials at the state and national levels are dedicated to ending these horrific practices.
  • The Wisconsin State Fire Chiefs' Association seeks nominations for the WSFCA Chief of the Year Award. Find more information and nomination forms here. Deadline is April 1st. 
  • January is National Radon Action Month. Radon is a radioactive and odorless gas resulting from trace amounts of natural uranium in the ground. To test your home, you can pick up a kit for $6 from the Manitowoc County Health Department. Learn more here.
  • Manitowoc County Miracles will host its 11th annual Special Olympics Team Basketball Invitation at Two River High School on Jan. 27th from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
  • The next Manitowoc winter market will be on Jan. 27th from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Cross Fit (3651 Dewey St.)
  • English professor Albert Sears from Silver Lake College will present during a faculty colloquium on Jan. 25th. Event is free and open to the public.
  • On Feb. 8th, author Rochelle Pennington will discuss "The Christmas Tree Ship" at the Holiday Inn in Manitowoc.
  • The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 731, of Manitowoc County is offering three scholarships to qualifying high school seniors. Contact their office to learn more.
