Water Quality and Suicide Prevention Task Forces Continue Working Through Summer

Many legislators spend the summer months back in their districts meeting with constituents and local leaders to help address community issues and develop legislation for the upcoming fall session. But many also participate in different task forces to address issues that impact the entire state.

To help address some of those important issues, along with the adoption task force that I highlighted last week, the Speaker convened two other task forces; the Speaker’s Task Force on Water Quality and the Speaker’s Task Force on Suicide Prevention.

At the onset of the legislative session, legislative leaders agreed that access to clean drinking water is a priority. But some areas of the state struggle with access to clean water. The task force is holding public hearings in different parts of the state to learn more about the struggles communities face and the actions some are taking to improve water quality in those areas.

The task force recently met last week in Stevens Point and has met a total of eight times. The group will bring forth recommendations for legislative action in the coming months.

Earlier this week, the Speaker’s Task Force on Suicide Prevention met in Marshfield taking public testimony over the course of several hours. The hearing was one of five the committee held since April in an effort to understand strategies to stem the growing tide of suicide, especially among farmers.

According to the task force website, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in Wisconsin. The committee will be evaluating current resources for prevention and offer recommendations for legislative action later this fall when the committee finalizes its work.
