Legislature Sends the Budget to the Governor

This week, the Assembly passed the biennial budget followed by the Senate a day later. The state budget is arguably the most important bill the Legislature will consider this session. It funds a variety of crucial state programs including Healthcare, K-12 education, roads and bridges, the UW System, and a number of other state programs that our constituents use on a daily basis.

The bill now heads to the governor’s desk where he has three options. He can veto the bill in its entirety, he can use the powerful line-item veto removing portions of the bill or he can sign the bill into law.

Vetoing the bill in its entirety would have a negative impact on healthcare, schools, transportation and the middle class. All of these areas saw significant increases in this budget:

  • $1.6 billion in total funding for healthcare. New investments were made for nursing homes, personal care workers and direct caregivers. Many provide care for the elderly and disabled.
  • $500 million for schools including increases for mental health and special education resources.
  • $487 million dollars for transportation with significant increases to fix local roads and state highways.
  • $500 million dollar tax cut for the middle class.

I was proud to support this budget that addressed our priorities in a significant way. My hope is that Gov. Evers signs this budget into law.
