Budget Writing Committee Approves Education Funding Increase

This week the Joint Finance Committee agreed to boost K-12 education funding by more than $500 million over the next biennium, bringing the total funding back to two-thirds of the total cost for the first time since it was eliminated under former Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle.

The plan includes $200 and $204 per pupil in the first and second years of the biennium in addition to nearly $100 million in special education funding and $12 million for mental health services. Special education funding has not been increased in more than a decade and this budget helps schools fund this important necessity.

The new funding proposal comes on the heels of a historic investment made in K-12 education last session of $636 million, a budget that Gov. Evers called “pro-kid.” This proposal brings education spending to $12.3 billion, the most in state history, while directing more dollars to the classroom to ensure that every child, regardless of zip code, will be a given a high-quality education.

Both Gov. Evers and Assembly Republicans promised on the campaign trail to raise funding back to two-thirds of the total cost for K-12 education. Our pro-kid budget does just that and a little more!
