This week the Assembly Committee on Family Law voted to approve several bills aimed at improving the adoption process and reducing the amount of time children spend in the child welfare system in Wisconsin.
The package of bills make it easier for prospective parents to adopt children from the child welfare system and ensure that when children are reunified with their biological parents, they will return to a safe and loving home. It is always our goal to reunify children with their parents but no child should be placed in a home where there is a substantial likelihood of abuse, neglect, or exposure to drugs among other things. In those situations, this package of bills will ensure more children are adopted and cared for by loving parents.
Nearly every bill passed the committee with bipartisan support. I’m looking forward to these bills making their way through the Senate before session comes to a close next spring.
