Gun Deer Season Begins This Weekend

This weekend, marks the start of the annual 9-day gun deer hunt in Wisconsin.

Before you head into the woods searching for your trophy buck, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is passing along some need-to-know information.

First, a CWD surveillance of the northern district will begin, encompassing 18 counties in northern Wisconsin. The sampling effort is aimed at finding the locations where CWD is present in a continued effort to limit the spread of the disease.

Also, remember to properly dispose of deer carcasses if you have a successful hunt. Leaving remains of CWD infected deer may pose an increased risk and spread of the highly infectious disease. The DNR has a number of sampling stations throughout the state to have your deer tested after harvest. A link to disposal sites is included below.

The DNR is asking hunters to dispose of remains at a landfill that accepts deer carcasses, properly designated dumpsters or at a transfer station.

Here are a few additional reminders:

• You no longer need to physically tag your deer. All deer may be registered online at gamereg.wi.gov and must be registered by 5 pm the day after recovery.
• You must purchase a license to participate in the gun deer hunt. Licenses are available at: https://gowild.wi.gov/
• Unlike bow hunting, during the gun deer hunt season, hunters must wear blaze orange or fluorescent pink. At least 50% of the upper body must be covered in blaze orange or fluorescent pink, however, DNR suggests hunters where 100% solid blaze orange or pink if possible.

Saturday, November 30 is the 10th annual “Small Business Saturday,” and the perfect opportunity to support small local businesses that are the backbone of our community. Many businesses throughout the region will offer special incentives and promotions during the day.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, there are 440,763 small businesses in Wisconsin, accounting for 97.7 % of all businesses statewide and employing 1.2 million people.
