Family Law Moves Marriage-Related Bills Forward

This week the Assembly Committee on Family Law voted to move two bills out of the committee.

The first bill, AB 439, will eliminate a six-month waiting period after a divorce is finalized before an individual is allowed to re-marry. Wisconsin is one of only six states that mandates a waiting period at all, and is among the three states with the longest waiting period.

The second bill, Assembly Bill 457, makes updates to the marriage license application and issuance process. The bill makes multiple changes, including allowing applicants to obtain a marriage license anywhere in Wisconsin and allowing for flexibility when a birth record is unobtainable. Not all U.S. citizens have access to a birth certificate, especially if they were not born in the U.S. This bill ensures that any Wisconsinite with proper state or federal identification is able to marry here in our state.

Respiratory Care Provider Reforms Receive Hearing

On Tuesday I had the opportunity to testify on my Respiratory Care Providers (RCPs) bill, AB 558. I’m excited the Assembly Health Committee heard my bill, which has already received an Executive Session in the Senate and is ready to go to the floor in that house. This bill makes simple but important updates to the licensure process for RCPs, aligning our state statutes with changes that the field has undergone in the past several years. I’m excited to see the Assembly move this bill forward, and I am hoping to see these important reforms make it to the Governor’s desk this session!

Foreign Exchange Student Finds New Home
South Milwaukee High English teacher, Jill Bobber, caught the attention of many community members over the school’s winter break. Just before the holidays, Mrs. Bobber and her husband opened their home to a Taiwanese foreign exchange student who was displaced. The student, Pearl, came to South Milwaukee in August and has since been commended for her ability to connect with people – including her English teacher, Mrs. Bobber.

Thank you, Mrs. Bobber, for stepping up!

To earn the rank of Eagle Scout, David completed his Eagle Scout Service Project by constructing a deck for the tigers at the Milwaukee County Zoo. Be sure to check out the tiger exhibit next time you pay a visit to the zoo!
