At the Capitol

Assembly Bill 481- This bill creates a family treatment court grant program under the Children's Code and a juvenile treatment court grant program under the Juvenile Justice Code.

Working with my colleague Rep. Jessie Rodriguez, R- Oak Creek, this legislation seeks to expand the infrastructure of the Family Drug Treatment Court, which is part of the Children's Court, to make it available in all counties. To read the full Madison 365 article, please click here.

Civil Dialogue

Last month I joined my colleague Senator Pat Testin at Bowl-A-Vard Lanes to participate in a Civil Dialogue hosted by WisconsinEye. Together we talked about our work on the Wisconsin Veterans Farm Bill, and how we can work together in the future- even though we are on opposite sides of the aisle and represent very different districts. Please click here to view the episode.

Thank you to Steve Walters (pictured above) for hosting Sen. Testin and I at Bowl-A-Vard Lanes!

Library Day

On February 21, I was happy to welcome constituents who support and work in our public libraries. Thank you to Milwaukee Public Library for making their visit possible!

On February 20th, I had the pleasure of meeting this great group of students and constituents from Milwaukee in the Capitol. A day at the Capitol can be an educational experience for young people - please call if there is ever any school or youth group that is interested in coming to the Capitol. We are happy to help facilitate the experience.

Inmate 501

I created the publication, Inmate 501, to showcase the converging crises we are facing in the Wisconsin Prison system: the overcrowding adult population and a declining juvenile population. With this, I drafted three legislative solutions to address these issues.

Friends and Neighbors,

I hope you and your family are well! I wanted to provide you with a couple of important legislative alerts.

First, I want to say thank you to all of the neighbors who called, emailed, wrote in, attended meetings and rallies to call for action to close Lincoln Hills.  Our community spoke with loud persistence and made these coming changes possible. Below you will find legislative updates on bills I've worked on with my colleagues across the aisle regarding Lincoln Hills and Wisconsin's expungement law.  I am working hard to improve the criminal justice system in Wisconsin, and though we've made progress, there is still much work to be done.

As your representative it is always my goal to be as accessible as possible. should any questions or concerns arise, please call my office at (608) 266-0645. Additionally, to provide more news and daily updates I post frequently on my official Facebook and Twitter pages. I hope it helps keep you informed. As always, please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you.

State Representative
18th Assembly District

Lincoln Hills Closure: History in the Making

We've been working to close Lincoln Hills for years. After countless meetings, hearings, rallies, bills, and endless individual advocacy, a plan to close Lincoln Hills unanimously passed the Assembly. I am proud to have contributed a significant role in drafting and guiding this historic piece of legislation, what we call "The Wisconsin Model." Please click here to watch my speech on the floor of the Assembly on the passage of the bill.

On February 13th, I joined my colleagues for a press conference to announce the proposal for the closure of Lincoln Hills

Below are some pictures of the effort over the years. The first is a picture of the welcome sign that I took from my phone on a visit back in 2015. Next is a picture from presenting the need for regional facilities that I gave in February 2016. Next are pictures from last week, when the years of hard work became a reality.

Reform to Wisconsin's Expungement Law

This session I worked closely with my colleague Rep. David Steffen (R-Green Bay) to bring comprehensive reform to Wisconsin's expungement law. On February 21, the Assembly passed a proposal that would allow youthful offenders a chance to have their record expunged after successfully completing their sentence, and giving judges the opportunity to consider an individual’s post-sentence behavior when determining expungement. Please click here to view my floor speech.

On February 15th, I testified on the floor in favor of expungement reform

Know Someone in Need of Clearing a Criminal Conviction?

If Senate Bill 53 is signed into law, the following individuals will be newly eligible to apply for expungement. Please take a moment to look through this information and if you know anyone in need, please do not hesitate to contact the office for further information.

-Any misdemeanor or the lowest two levels of felony convictions
-Successfully completed the judge's sentence
-Have not been in trouble since
-This is RETROACTIVE, so even very old convictions can be eligible

For more information and background on expungement law in Wisconsin, please take a look at this handout I made back in 2016 when I began working on the bill that passed last week
. We've been working on this since 2016. Click here for more details on expungement.
