Rep. Goyke unveiling "Wisconsin Urban Farming Futures" Initiative legislation at Kaleidoscope Gardens in the Merrill Park Neighborhood

On October 30th I was proud to join my colleague Senator LaTonya Johnson and urban farming stakeholders in introducing the "Wisconsin Urban Farming Futures" Initiative at Kaleidoscope Gardens in Milwaukee.

Rural and urban farming operations play a vital role in the economic success of our State. Wisconsin’s agricultural economy is changing.
Urban farming is part of Wisconsin’s future agricultural economy and agriculture community. States across the country are investing in urban farming, working to eliminate urban food deserts, encouraging entrepreneurship and creating new workforce opportunities for those interested in the agriculture field.

The Wisconsin Urban Farming Futures Initiative invests our State in supporting the field of urban farming. Specifically, the legislation accomplishes four goals:

1.) Creates within the State's Department of Agriculture (DATCP) an Office of Urban Agriculture to help support existing urban farmers as well as those interested in urban farming.

2.) Requires DATCP to develop and promote programs to support urban farming.

3.) Requires the identification of land in Milwaukee’s 30th Street Industrial Corridor for the future degree offering “Wisconsin School of Urban Agriculture.”

4.) Provides construction funding for the future “Wisconsin School of Urban Agriculture.”

This package of legislation is supported by The Institute for Urban Agriculture and Nutrition (IUAN) whose members include Growing Power, among schools of higher education. This legislation is also supported by Hunger Task Force, the Milwaukee Food Council, and the Victory Garden Initiative.

Rep. Goyke Legislation Advances

Assembly Bill 481/Senate Bill 390 - Family Treatment Courts

This month I testified in the Assembly and Senate in support of legislation I am authoring with my colleagues Representative Jessie Rodriguez, Senator Alberta Darling, and Senator LaTonya Johnson that will create a grant-making program for problem solving courts within the Department of Children and Families.

Assembly Bill 481/Senate Bill 390 is legislation I have worked on for multiple sessions.

All of us have seen our communities struggle with drug addiction. AB 481/SB 390 empowers counties to develop evidence-based programs to better defeat addiction, get families sober, and keep families together. These treatment courts can save lives – and save money.

AB 481/SB 390 accomplishes many things, including:

* Creates a grant-making program for problem solving courts within the Department of Children and Families.

* Grants would enable counties to establish and operate problem-solving courts beyond the adult criminal justice system.

This legislation passed out of committee in the Assembly unanimously in June.
