My wife Gaby and I have worked very hard on our home, as have many of you. It is a community shared labor of love. We enjoy Milwaukee and living in the Historic Concordia Neighborhood. Recently Urban Milwaukee wrote a story on our home and neighborhood. We will continue working to bring our home back to life.

Pathways to Employment for Youthful Offenders Scheduled for Public Hearing

In my last update I alerted you to a very important piece of legislation that I am co-authoring with my colleague, State Rep. David Steffen (R-Green Bay), that is a comprehensive reform to Wisconsin's expungement law. I am proud to report this legislation, Assembly Bill 331, is scheduled for a public hearing on June 1st.

This bipartisan legislation provides comprehensive reform to Wisconsin’s expungement law and is an important step in connecting employers in need with potential employees who are looking to overcome their past and find success in the workforce.

Channel3000 out of Madison wrote a great article about the legislation. Please click here to view the article and video.

I will keep you informed as the legislation moves forward.

Rep. Goyke Legislation Helping Veterans Advances

I am proud to report that after months of work and advocacy two important pieces of legislation I have authored to benefit veterans in Wisconsin are advancing.

On June 8th the Assembly Veterans Committee will be holding a public hearing on Assembly Bill 80 and Assembly Bill 302. Wisconsin has a strong tradition of its citizens serving our nation in uniform and returning home to be leaders in their respective communities. Many of these Wisconsin veterans are now farmers or business owners and play an integral role in the economic success of our state.

Assembly Bill 80 puts Wisconsin in-line with the federal government on who it certifies as a Disabled Veteran-Owned Business.

Assembly Bill 302, The Wisconsin Veterans Farm Bill of 2017, creates the Veteran Farmer Assistance and Outreach Program within our state's Department of Agriculture and also creates a logotype issued by the State for certified veteran-owned farms and products.

Stay tuned for exciting updates as this legislation moves forward!

Introduction of Safe Communities Package

On May 17th I was proud to join my colleagues Rep. Chris Taylor and Sen. LaTonya Johnson in introducing the Safe Communities Package.

This legislation seeks to establish statewide law enforcement use of force principles aimed at reducing incidents of officer-involved deaths and increasing safety for everyone in the community, including law enforcement.

Wisconsin Public Radio covered the press event. Please click here to view article and audio. An excerpt is below.

"....Rep. Evan Goyke, D-Milwaukee, who represents Milwaukee's Sherman Park neighborhood, said making those policies public would provide assurance to community. Last year, Sherman Park was rattled by public unrest after the fatal shooting of Syville Smith by a Milwaukee police officer."

"Some of the emotion that we felt in Milwaukee last August was not knowing," Goyke said. "If the community has answers and a policy that's in black and white in state law, there's a lot more clarity and that solves to reduce a lot of anxiety."

Highway 175 Update

Since my election to the legislature I have advocated for a review and redesign of Highway 175. An examination of this issue was needed and I am proud to recently join a stakeholder group digging into this issue. Some of the discussion and plans were recently highlighted by Urban Milwaukee. Please see the article below and stay tuned for future updates.

"The project involves tearing down and rebuilding state-owned freeway land, and therefore will have to make it’s way into the state transportation budget. That’s where Rep. Evan Goyke (D-Milwaukee) comes in. He’s agreed to take a final plan to Madison and work to get it into the queue."
