   In The District

On December 17th I joined my neighbors, fellow local leaders, and We Got This Milwaukee in helping host the 2016 500 Black Tuxedos event. This important gathering not only continues to strengthen our shared neighborhoods but helps our youth - the future leaders of our community.

On December 9th I received notification that the 27th and Wells Streets Commercial Historic District has been placed on the State and National Register of Historic Places!

I submitted a letter in support of this designation in August and am very excited to see it approved. Congrats! Great news for our community.

Energy Assistance

With winter in full swing, I encourage you to closely examine your residence to see how you can winterize and make your home more energy efficient so you can save money on heating and electric costs.

The United States Department of Energy and its Energy Saver Website provide many ideas and resources on how to save on energy costs.

Wisconsin's Focus on Energy Program helps citizens lower their energy consumption and costs by making their homes more energy efficient. Please visit their website here to learn how you can save more money on your energy bill.

Employment Resource

The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) has a Skill Explorer website that provides a free job search tool allowing Wisconsin workers to search for employment opportunities that match their existing skills and training. Skill Explorer can be found by clicking here.

Workers can search for career opportunities on the Skill Explorer website by typing in their former or current job title. Skill Explorer provides a list of current openings relating to the work experience of that job through openings on Job Center of Wisconsin. Skill Explorer provides overviews explaining what each specific job entails, how much workers typically make in that position, and any special training or background needed for the occupation. Skill Explorer’s mapping function will show hot spots in the state for particular occupations, as well as allow individuals to search for current openings by county.

In addition, the City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board, and UMOS have partnered to fund 135 transitional job placements in City departments. There are certain requirements to apply for these jobs.

Rep. Goyke Sworn In For Third Term

On January 3rd inaugural ceremonies for the State Legislature were held at the Capitol in Madison. I am honored to represent our community in the legislature.

Throughout the 2017-19 legislative session I will serve as Ranking Member on the Assembly Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety and the Assembly Committee on Family Law. I will also serve as a member of the Assembly Committees on Corrections, Housing, and Veterans.

Rep. Goyke to Lead Juvenile Corrections Reform

This legislative session I am proud to serve as a member of the Corrections Committee. This committee will be reviewing Wisconsin's correctional system, the challenges it faces, and reforms that can be made.

This session I will reintroduce bi-partisan juvenile justice reform legislation requiring the Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC) to study and report on the implementation of the “Missouri Model” of incarcerating juveniles.

Our current model of incarcerating children does not work. One large institution, hours away from the State’s largest population center, has led to unacceptable outcomes and unsustainable costs. The cost of incarcerating a child at Lincoln Hills is enormous. The recidivism rate for incarcerated youth is alarmingly high.

Reduced recidivism means reduced crime. By utilizing smaller facilities closer to home, this model has produced better outcomes at a lower cost. The adoption of a new model will increase community and facility safety and decrease recidivism by creating a better secure environment for jailed children in Wisconsin.

In recent weeks, this promising juvenile justice model has been highlighted in Wisconsin by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and in a recent year-end interview by Attorney General Brad Schimel (Begin at 21 Minutes).

Last session, I introduced Assembly Bill 746 following my personal visit to Lincoln Hills in December of 2015 after learning of the alleged abuses and subsequent investigations. This legislation received bi-partisan support in the State Assembly.

State lawmaker takes aim at bad property owners

Recently the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel profiled in a recent article the legislation I am pursuing regarding problems in our community caused by mortgage foreclosures and damaging landlords who don't always have the neighborhood's best interests in mind.

Stay tuned for updates on this legislation as this session moves forward. Thank you to all of you for your support thus far!
