The Goyke Report - Fall 2016 Edition |
State Capitol
In The District Earlier this summer I was honored by the City of Milwaukee Tobacco-Free Alliance on the work local stakeholders and I did to pass 2015 Wis. Act 275. This legislation provides the City of Milwaukee the ability to not-renew, suspend, or revoke tobacco licenses for businesses with a well documented nuisance activity. We will now be able to help reduce crime and promote economic development in neighborhoods throughout the City of Milwaukee with this legislation becoming law. Thank you for everybody's great work!
Rep. Goyke recognized by Tobacco-Free Alliance On October 22nd I was proud to join with my neighbors and Molina Health Care to support volunteers repairing a home in the Sherman Park Neighborhood and continue with further beautification of the neighborhood. Thank you to all of my fellow volunteers for coming to help these great neighbors and fellow community members.

Milwaukee Legislative Delegation
For the last two years I have had the honor of chairing the Democratic delegation of legislators from Milwaukee. We have worked hard together to bring Milwaukee specific issues to the Capitol and also educate our out-state colleagues on the important impact Milwaukee has on our great State.
In addition to policy initiatives we also performed community service together to further invest in our shared community. I look forward to the delegation continuing its important work in 2017.

I hope this communication finds you and your family well and that you are enjoying the beautiful fall weather.
I am honored to represent our community again in the upcoming legislative session. As you may remember from my last update in the spring, due to rules regulating legislative offices during a campaign year I have not been allowed to send a fall update until today.
I want to keep you updated and informed on some of my summer activities on behalf of our community since my last communication to you.
As your representative it is always my goal to be as accessible as possible. If your neighborhood association, club, or community group is having a meeting, please consider inviting me to attend. We can discuss how your voices, values, and concerns influence my work in the Capitol. Please call my office at (608) 266-0645 and let me know about your local event. I’d love to visit with you back home in Milwaukee.
Evan Goyke Marrying My Best Friend Gabriela
Before I provide you with a legislative update, I would like to give you a brief personal update of my own. I married my beautiful wife Gaby in Milwaukee on October 29th. We have gotten to know so many of you over the years and I thank you for all of your well wishes and congratulations!

Legislative Council Study Committee on Reducing Recidivism and Removing Impediments to Ex-Offender Employment
This past summer and throughout the fall I have served as a member on a Legislative Council Study Committee that is looking in-depth at policies to further reduce recidivism in our criminal justice system, as well as removing barriers to employment that former offenders are experiencing when they transition back into the workforce. The committee has met three times thus far and is slated to meet again on November 30th.
I will keep you updated on the committee's work and policy suggestions. All committee materials can be found on the Wisconsin Legislative Council website.

Newly designed logotypes The Beautiful Sherman Park Neighborhood: This summer our community experienced great heartache with the officer-involved shooting of a young man and the unrest that followed. As we know, Sherman Park is a beautiful neighborhood and its residents are vibrant integral members of our community. As I said back in August, listening and understanding is often difficult in difficult times. We know that everyday too many people wake up in a world without honest opportunity and too many law enforcement officers are called to be more than resources allow. This is not sustainable. We must break this cycle by listening to the voices of those who have been ignored for far too long, as well as those sworn to protect and serve our communities. Milwaukee is defined not only by acts of protest, but also by acts of healing. I was very inspired when I joined hundreds of my neighbors to work together in service, to heal, clean the neighborhood, and begin the process of positive and sustained change. I believe our community can grow and succeed together. On August 23rd I was proud to join many fellow community members in calling on the State to further invest in job growth in the Sherman Park following the discovery by myself and fellow stakeholders that the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) has neglected Sherman Park. Below is a excerpt from my remarks: "....I have my own eyes. I can walk and drive around this neighborhood and see that more needs to be done to bring back the industry that built this community. I have my own ears and I can hear from my constituents that are calling my office looking for an opportunity at a good paying job." Please click here for news article and video.
Rep. Goyke at community gathering in Sherman Park calling on the State and WEDC to invest in local job creation Following the events of August, Wisconsin Eye conducted an interview with members of the Milwaukee Democratic delegation on August 24th to get their thoughts and views on how we can work together to continue moving Milwaukee forward. You can view the interview video here. Reading Challenge and School Volunteering As you may remember last year, I joined my colleague Rep. Dale Kooyenga (R-Brookfield) in issuing a challenge to our communities to join us in volunteering in local schools reading to children. I am proud to report that the challenge was a wonderful success. Thank you again to all of you who have contacted our offices to volunteer. A special thank you to the students at Mary McLeod Bethune Academy on North 35th Street where I had the pleasure to read to a group of students in Ms. Schowalter's class. I enjoyed seeing the students excel in their reading skills and will be back volunteering again soon.
A Special Welcome To Some Of Our Nation's Newest Citizens! On June 25th I participated in a Citizen Recognition Picnic at Veteran's Park hosted by the International Learning Center. Many of our friends and fellow community members came together to welcome our neighbors as some of America's newest citizens. Welcome and congratulations!
