In the District

Rep. Goyke and Rep. Hutton at Milwaukee Rotary Club

On October 13th I spoke before the Milwaukee Rotary Club with my colleague Rep. Rob Hutton regarding criminal justice reform and bi-partisan proposals we both have been working on throughout this session.

Next Door Milwaukee will soon be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of their Books for Kids program. I was proud to join the incredible students and share a great book!

As Chair of the Milwaukee Delegation I recently hosted a bi-partisan meeting of legislators in Milwaukee with the Near West side Partners Inc. to learn more about opportunities for community and business development.

I was joined by my colleagues from left to right:  Rep. Kooyenga, Rep. Skowronski, Rep. Sinicki, Mr. Keith Stanley, Sen. Harris Dodd, Rep. Barnes, Rep. Brostoff, and Rep. Bowen.

At the Capitol

The State Assembly will be in session on October 20, October 21, October 27, and November 3rd. I have held a number of meetings here at the Capitol to prepare for what will be a very busy end to the fall legislative session. Recently there has been a flurry of activity in committees on which I sit including the Committees on Criminal Justice, Judiciary, and Public Benefit Reform.

Thank you to those of you who have contacted me to share your opinions on various pieces of legislation. Your opinions help keep me informed and allow me to better represent our community.

The 18th Assembly District throughout this legislative session has been fortunate to have a wonderful corps of student interns in the office who have helped me represent you here in the legislature. I only wish you can see in person the commitment and hard work that they bring to the office each and every day. We are very lucky to have such bright and intelligent people who dedicate themselves to public service.

On behalf of the 18th Assembly District I would like to thank Mr. Ben Schneider, Mr. Dayton Shackelford, Ms. Edona Ajvazi, Ms. Maura Haydin, Ms. Ameila Moore, and Mr. Sean Bukowski.

New 2015-2016 Blue Books

Attention! Hot off the press! 2015-2016 Blue Books available now! Each legislative session, the State of Wisconsin prints Blue Books and allocates a number of them to legislators to distribute to constituents back home. Blue Books are a wonderful resource to learn about and understand State Government. If you would like one, please contact me and I can drop it off in person or mail it to you directly.

Employment Resource

The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) has a Skill Explorer website that provides a free job search tool allowing Wisconsin workers to search for employment opportunities that match their existing skills and training. Skill Explorer can be found by clicking here.

Workers can search for career opportunities on the Skill Explorer website by typing in their former or current job title. Skill Explorer provides a list of current openings relating to the work experience of that job through openings on Job Center of Wisconsin. Skill Explorer provides overviews explaining what each specific job entails, how much workers typically make in that position, and any special training or background needed for the occupation. Skill Explorer’s mapping function will show hot spots in the state for particular occupations, as well as allow individuals to search for current openings by county.

Study Committee Legislation Receives Public Hearing

Exciting development and progress! On September 10th the Assembly Committee on Corrections held a public hearing on Assembly Bill 51 and Assembly Bill 52 where I testified in support of both bills.

These two important pieces of legislation are products of the Legislative Council Study Committee that I served as Vice-Chair of that looked in-depth at problem-solving courts, alternatives, and diversions (TAD). The committee examined veterans courts, drug and alcohol courts, and drunk driving courts in Wisconsin. The recommendations had overwhelming bipartisan support from the 16 members of the committee, which included legislators, judges, prosecutors, treatment providers and mental health advocates.

Assembly Bill 51: Creates a grant-making program for problem solving courts within the Department of Children and Families. The grants would enable counties to establish and operate evidence based problem-solving courts beyond the adult criminal justice system.

Assembly Bill 52: Expands TAD eligible programs to include participants who need treatment beyond substance abuse, including mental illness. Among other provisions, it also codifies the Wisconsin Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, clarifies that both counties and Tribes may qualify for TAD grants and may jointly administer a TAD program, and requires a monthly submission of data requested by Wisconsin Department of Justice.

This public hearing was an important step in the legislation advancing and I will continue to work with my colleagues to see both bills voted out of committee and brought before the entire Assembly for consideration.

Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development

In late August I was honored to accept a fellowship in the 2015 Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership Development (BILLD) hosted by the Council of State Governments (CSG). I was one of three Wisconsin legislators chosen to attend the 5 day program.

The non-partisan CSG and the BILLD program helps lawmakers: Learn more about key issues, improve upon effective communication, and provides avenues for legislators in Wisconsin and across the Midwest to develop a dialogue and consensus of working together.

I learned a lot from the program and my Midwest legislative colleagues. This new knowledge will continue to grow and help me better represent our community at the Capitol.

Goyke/Kooyenga School Reading Challenge Update

As the school year has begun with an amazing start, the reading volunteer challenge issued by myself and my colleague Rep. Dale Kooyenga (R-Brookfield), that I detailed in my previous e-update, has been a great success! Thank you to all of you who have contacted our offices to volunteer.

I personally have scheduled myself to volunteer for an hour every Monday morning. I am working regularly with a great group of kids who truly love to read and appreciate the support and encouragement of having community members in the classroom.

Rep. Kooyenga and I continue to be very excited about this initiative and encourage you to join us! Each of us remembers how important having an individual read to us was in our early education. Our offices stand ready as a resource to connect you with volunteer coordinators.

A summary of our challenge may be found here.
