2019 Recap
This past year has been busy, exciting, and rewarding. From introducing legislation, meeting with constituents, greeting local school groups at the Capitol, reading emails & letters, getting involved in committees, building relationships both in the Capitol and at home in the district, and attending community events, this year as your representative has truly been an honor. I am looking forward to what comes next! Here is a look back on the last year, in our office...
Legislation introduced:
Over the past year, I co-authored over 140 bills and co-sponsored 100+. You can find the list here!
Resolutions passed:
- Wisconsin Motherhood Month - May (AJR 41)
- Wisconsin Fatherhood Month - June (AJR 65)
In-District Office Hours:
It is important to me to create space to hear from constituents, so I offer in-district office hours with private appointments. Because of their popularity, we will continue them this winter.
Town Halls:
Our office engages with constituents in different ways. This year, I participated in and hosted town halls in Wauwatosa and Brookfield with my colleagues to discuss and explain Medicaid Expansion, I co-hosted two town halls with Congressman Sensenbrenner in Brookfield and Wauwatosa to discuss national and state issues, and I announced our "Topical Town Halls", a series of informational town halls on different non-partisan topics.
Press Conferences:
Press conferences are an opportunity for legislators to address a topic, or introduce legislation to the press corps. The press is then able to ask questions directly to the legislators. Most press conferences are live-streamed, and video clips are often used as audio on radio, or shown on local nightly television newscasts.
Knocking on Doors:
Legislative door-knocking is part of my job. Each legislator should knock doors throughout the year, reaching out to constituents and making sure you have our contact information, can express concerns, and are able to ask any questions you might have. I've found this a fantastic opportunity to hear the voices of our district, and am trying to get to every ward in the district by April 14th! (Yes, we will be out this winter!)
Constituent Correspondence:
Over the past year, we have had 2300+ contacts from constituents -- from letters, to emails, to phones calls, we love hearing from you about the issues you care about. I often read the letters while sitting in the window seat of my office. And I read and respond to emails from anywhere and everywhere! Sometimes I pick up the phone and call folks directly, but usually we respond in the form you have contacted us. It is our policy to respond to every contact, so if you haven't heard back from us, please let us know so we can make sure you do!
We are proud of what we have accomplished the past year. It's been an honor to build this office, to reach out and establish and nurture relationships for future work, and to respond to the needs of the district as they have arisen. We look forward to what's to come in 2020 for the 14th District and the state of Wisconsin -- Forward together!
What's next?
Legislation we are working on:
- Prescription drug costs & accessibility
- Education - gifted & talented programs
- School safety
- Improving maternal mortality rates in Wisconsin
- & more!
Topical Town Halls:
Our next topical town hall will be on human trafficking on Thursday, January 30th, in the evening, on the border of Wauwatosa & Brookfield, and minutes from our Milwaukee wards! Keep an eye out for more details soon.
In-District Office Hours:
We look forward to hosting more in-district office hours with constituents this year! Let us know if you have a location idea in the 14th District -- we're up for trying new things!
If you'd like to schedule a meeting during our next office hours, send us an email and we can set that up.
