Steineke, Republicans Restore Legislative Checks

MADISON – Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna) released the following statement following the passage of Senate Bills 883, 884, and 886.

“Regardless of the hyperbole surrounding today’s Extraordinary Session, the legislature’s goals for this legislation were simple: ensuring a balance of power and protecting the legislative process. Over the past eight years, we have passed reforms that have moved Wisconsin forward – reforms that have been approved by the legislature, passed by the governor, and, when necessary, upheld by the courts. These reforms have involved all branches of government and levels of representation to ensure the voters’ voices are being heard.

“Taking into account the feedback I received from voters over the past several days, these bills will ensure that any changes made in the future will maintain this standard and require all branches of government to again approve, pass, and uphold. These checks and balances are the foundation on which our nation was made, and we are honoring the process and the intent behind it with today’s Extraordinary Session.”
