Roth, Steineke Respond to Sporting Groups Removal of Opposition
MADISON – Following the news that sporting groups Ducks Unlimited and Wisconsin Trout Unlimited, Inc. have withdrawn their opposition to the pending nonfederal wetlands legislation (Assembly Bill 547/Senate Bill 600), Senator Roger Roth joined Representative Jim Steineke in releasing the following statement:
“Wisconsin’s wetlands play an important role in our state’s ecology, environment and our sporting communities. But our current wetlands laws are in many ways overly complex and difficult to navigate.
“In introducing legislation to modernize and streamline our permitting process, our intent was always to provide a reasonable balance between preserving habitat and quality wetlands, while finding reasonable solutions to many of the problems plaguing homeowners, developers, farmers, local governments and other industries around Wisconsin.
“Understanding that the truest form of a compromise comes when everyone walks away with less than their full ask, the substitute amendment introduced this morning by Senators Roth and Cowles strikes a reasonable balance that we’ve all been working towards for months.”
Rep. Steineke plans to introduce an updated substitute amendment to AB 547 to reflect these agreed upon changes.
