Rep. Steineke Attends 2015 Foster Care Award Ceremony

Madison – On Wednesday, May 27th, Representative Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna) joined First Lady Tonette Walker and Department of Children and Families (DCF) Secretary Eloise Anderson to honor Oneida foster parent Gerald Doxtator by presenting him with the 2015 Governor’s Foster Care Award.

“Gerald Doxtator has gone above and beyond his duties as a foster parent,” said Rep. Steineke. “He has shown a tremendous ability to help those who are in need of a supportive and loving home. It is only fitting that we honor his work and dedication to the safety and well-being of our vulnerable children and youth.”

During Mr. Doxtator’s more than 20 years as a foster parent, he has cared for youth from tribes in Menomonee, Manitowoc, Milwaukee, Outagamie and Brown Counties and has become a statewide resource for Wisconsin’s Native American population. He has often been asked to provide shelter for the most difficult to place young men, who are struggling without a father figure or have had past run-ins with the juvenile justice system. Gerald is often not only these boys’ foster parent, but often serves as advocate and champion, making sure that they are receiving the help they need in school and beyond.

Governor Walker proclaimed the month of May as Foster Care Month in Wisconsin to recognize the foster parents who open their hearts and homes to children whose families are in crisis.
