Rep. Steineke Applauds Senate Vote on Town of Freedom

Economic Development Proposal

Madison –Assembly Majority Leader, Representative Jim Steineke (R-Kaukauna) announced today that the state Senate passed Assembly Bill (AB) 390, legislation that authorizes the use of a Tax Incremental District (TID) to help pave the way for economic development in the town of Freedom.

“I’m grateful for the support of the state Senate in passing this important bill that will help the town of Freedom continue to expands its industrial park,” said Rep. Steineke. “This bill will help address Freedom’s lack of space for its increase in economic activity, and will help facilitate greater development in the future.”

This legislation was drafted in response to local officials who received numerous requests from residents unable to expand their industrial and commercial businesses. The town’s industrial park is currently built-out and there are limited options available for future developers. The price to acquire nearby land is very inflated due to various factors, and town officials believe that the utilization of a TID is the most practical step to use in purchasing a parcel of land adjacent to their industrial park. The creation of a TID is necessary in order to provide such infrastructure as roads, utilities and lighting.

“This proposal has been in the planning phase for the past two years,” said town of Freedom Chairman Steve Lowney. “The use of a tax incremental district will set the stage for the direction of our town for the next 25-30 years. This is an exciting time for Freedom, and we are thankful to Rep. Steineke for taking the lead to shepherd this proposal through the Legislature and for assisting us through the process.”

Assembly Bill 390 has already passed the Assembly, and now awaits Governor Walker’s signature after which it will become law.
