Antigo Native to be Recognized as WI Assembly ‘Hometown Hero’

MADISON – The Wisconsin State Assembly will recognize Justin Schroepfer from Antigo, Wisconsin as a “Hometown Hero” at the upcoming Assembly session on June 14th.

Schroepfer drowned on June 11, 2016 while trying to save two women who were swimming in Lake Superior. His selfless last act resulted in one of the two women being rescued. Schroepfer was nominated by his State Representative, Mary Felzkowski (R-Irma), for his courage and commitment to helping others.

In response to Schroepfer’s heroic act, service organizations and government agencies built lifesaving stations along the Marquette-area shoreline and equipped them with life jackets. Schroepfer’s parents, Kevin and Connie, have donated money from his memorial to first responders in the Marquette Area. Schroepfer’s sacrifice will remain a reminder to rise to the occasion when others are in need.

The Wisconsin State Assembly sees giving back to the community as one of the most valuable characteristics one can have. The Assembly Hometown Heroes program seeks to identify and recognize individuals from around the state who give of themselves to make a difference in our communities and in the lives of those around them. Hometown Hero Award winners are invited and introduced as a special guest at an Assembly floor session and given the opportunity to speak.
