Legislative Update

April 10, 2018

Get Involved!

As you're probably aware, I've dedicated a significant amount of time and effort this session to bringing attention to the outdated, inefficient and extremely costly Green Bay Correctional Institution (GBCI) and to developing a common-sense solution to this problem. The solution I've developed would not only address the security, capacity and community concerns relating to the current facility, but would also save the state an estimated $150 Million! As a part of this ongoing effort, which directly impacts your community and your tax dollars, I want to make sure you are aware of every opportunity to get engaged. Do you support decommissioning and relocating GBCI to a more suitable location outside the Green Bay metro area? This initiative would:

-Save the state an estimated $150 Million in operational and deferred maintenance costs at the 120-year old facility.

-Provide an estimated $80 million in economic development opportunity through redevelopment of the current site in a way that preserves the historical integrity of the facility while also unlocking the full potential of the 50-acre property.

-Provide a modernized facility which will include appropriate capacity space to reduce overcrowding and have capabilities to provide enhanced programming and recidivism reduction opportunities.

Want to voice your support? I encourage you to email Village of Allouez President Jim Rafter at jrafter@villageofallouez.com to share your position on this important issue. Also, be on the look-out for additional opportunities to get engaged. The Village of Allouez is considering creating a petition relating to this issue to make it easier for residents to show support. More information on this item should be available later this month. You can check out the Village of Allouez's website for future updates!

Please get involved! You can make a big difference for Allouez residents by just indicating your support!

Signed Into Law

The Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial license plate will now collect a $25 payment with each plate which will directly support the Wisconsin and National Law Enforcement Memorial Funds. These outstanding organizations  honor the lives of our fallen law enforcement officers through permanent memorials; they also provide immediate financial assistance to families of law enforcement directly following a line-of-duty death. I was proud to join Governor Walker and members of law enforcement as he signed this bill into law. Because of this bill, the folks who choose to purchase this specialty plate will be directly supporting our state's law enforcement and families of law enforcement in a big way! You can learn more about the plate here and more about the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial organization here.

Upcoming Listening Session

Don't forget, I'll be holding a listening session on Friday, April 27 from 4:30PM-6:00PM at the Ashwaubenon Village Hall (2155 Holmgren Way). Listening sessions are a great opportunity for you to remain engaged, learn more about what I've worked on this session, and talk to me about any state-related issues of concern. I hope to see you there!
